The Federal Opposition Leader Tony Abbott says the recent attacks on Indian students in Melbourne show the city's streets are not safe and need better policing.

The Federal Government is reportedly paying for 25 Indian journalists to visit Australia.

But Mr Abbott says that money would be better spent on law enforcement.

"I think it would be much better spending the money on better policing of our streets, because that's the basic problem, our streets aren't safe, particularly the streets of Melbourne, which appear to have been pretty seriously under-policed," he said.

"If you didn't have these racially motivate bashings on unsafe streets, then we wouldn't have the PR problem."

In May and June 2009, Indian media reported what it saw to be racially motivated attacks against Indians, especially students. Rallies were organised in Melbourne and Sydney, and intense coverage of the perceived hate crimes commenced in India, being especially critical of Australia and Australian police services. The Australian government initially called for calm as it investigated the attacks. During the investigation, one Indian student confessed to having lit himself on fire by accident as he attempted to commit insurance fraud[1] and an Indian couple were charged with the murder of an Indian student for financial reasons[2]. In the aftermath of the arrests, the Australian High Commissioner to New Delhi, Peter Varghese, said to media: "Both cases were widely reported around the world, not just in India, as racist attacks. It's now clear ... it had nothing to do with race.".[2]
