Ukraine claims it will ‘win the war’ with F-16s

F-16 fighter jets could be a game changer in the ongoing conflict between Moscow and Kiev, a spokesman for the Ukrainian Air Force Command, Yury Ignat, claimed in remarks to Ukraine’s Espreso TV broadcaster on Saturday.

“When [we] have F-16, we will win this war,” Ignat said, adding that Kiev has repeatedly told its Western backers that the air defense systems it has already obtained from the West are insufficient to protect all of Ukraine’s territory against Russian air strikes.

“The territory of the country and the length of the state border are big and the frontline … is over 2,500 kilometers [long],” the Air Force spokesman said, counting Ukraine’s border with Belarus, its Black Sea shores, and the border with Moldova’s breakaway region of Transnistria as parts of the “frontline.” 

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called on the G7 nations to refrain from dividing the world into Cold War-style blocs aligned with either the US or China. The Western leaders, meanwhile, made Russia and China the focus of a joint statement on nuclear weapons.

Speaking to Japan’s Kyodo News as the leaders of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, and the US met in Hiroshima on Saturday, Guterres called for “active dialogue and cooperation” between the G7 nations and China on matters of climate change and development. 

“I believe it is very important to avoid the division of the world into two, and it’s very important to create bridges for serious negotiation,” he said.

Former All-American swimmer Riley Gaines slammed ex-college swim champ Lia Thomas over the trans athlete’s vocal stance on the Biden administration’s proposed changes to Title IX.

A group of Japanese activists took to the streets in the western Japanese city of Hiroshima on Friday (May 19) to protest against the G7 leaders' summit and nuclear war.

Protesters said their ire was sparked by a meeting of leaders of several nuclear-armed powers, including the United States, in a city that was devastated by the world’s first atomic bombing in 1945.

The G7 summit runs from Friday to Sunday (May 19-21), in which member country leaders are expected to discuss a possible tightening of sanctions on Russia, and security concerns about China, among other issues.

HIROSHIMA, Japan — With Russia’s war on Ukraine nearing a potential inflection point, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is set to travel to Japan this weekend to address U.S. President Joe Biden and other G7 leaders, drawing on this city’s tragic history as a backdrop for his latest plea to secure more military and financial support.

Although the details of Zelenskyy’s travel plans remained opaque due to security concerns, the head of Ukraine’s national defense council, Oleksii Danilov, announced the trip on national television Friday, confirming news reports that he would attend.
