I don't think we've heard the last of the Wood saga. It wasn't just about Freedom vs Terrorism. It wasn't just about finding ways to pay the dues, through the intermediary expertise of selected contractors, so Howard can swear a ransom was not paid.
The part we haven't heard about, yet, was the intercessory prayer offered up, day and night without ceasing and often with candles and clouds of incense, on behalf of the entire Wood family, by the Parliamentary Prayer Fellowship. I wonder if Brian Houston, of Hillsong, was invited to a guest spot at the gig.
However this "miracle" was achieved, it sure as heck has taken the sting out of the dilemma over the detention laws. The mass media will beat it up to buggery, too, with their bullshit detectors switched to stand-by, under orders from on high.
I hope Doug Wood can sing, I can feel the Horst Wessel comin' on. And a gen-yoo-whine Aussie ticker-tape parade.
But, first, a replay of Howard's sobs over Margaret Hassan, if you don't mind. Oh, sorry! Hassan was in Iraq to teach kids, not to earn a fast buck. Could you manage a huff and a sniff for her, Sir Junior Downer, just for the memory?
At a press conference at Melbourne Airport, Mr Wood said he supports Australian and US policies on Iraq, and apologised to Prime Minister John Howard and US President George W Bush for some of the things he said while in captivity.
"I'm proof positive that the policy of the American and Australian governments is the right one," he said. Mr Wood says his rescue by local police is evidence of the successful training by Australian and American troops.
NO SIR!!
You are proof that your captors are less butchers than the US troops in a rut. You are lucky your captors had ethics and did not dispose of you as soon as the deadline set had passed. Your words are making more precarious the life of other kidnappees. Please don't pat yourself on the back. You got lucky - very lucky - especially when lives in Iraq are very cheap... and please shut up...
Anyway, we are happy you got out of that ordeal alive.
Looks to me that this was all siimply to promote ASIO's new head, and qualify him for whatever happens next.
What's most remarkable is that when the Iraqis found Wood before the scheduled transfer, Downer still thought it was his own script being acted and responded accordingly... didn't have a clue!
I wonder what new powers Asio are going to get now.
By the way TG, Adelaide just received a 100 member anti-terror team..
a muddy version of events
More to come
