assassinating khalil al-wazir...

Israel has for the first time admitted assassinating the deputy of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat in a 1988 seaborne raid in Tunisia.

The operation was planned by the Mossad spy agency and carried out by the Sayeret Matkal elite commando unit, a report published in Israel's top-selling Yediot Aharonot on Thursday said.

Israel has long been suspected of assassinating Khalil al-Wazir, who was better known as Abu Jihad. But only now has the country's military censor cleared the Yediot to publish the information, including an interview with the commando who killed him, at least 12 years after the newspaper obtained the information.

The operation was commanded by Nahum Lev who, in an interview before his death in 2000, spoke frankly about his role in the operation although it was never published.

"Abu Jihad was involved in horrible acts against civilians ... I shot him without hesitation," the commando told Yediot.

A long-time friend and deputy to Arafat who headed the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO), Abu Jihad had played a leading role in directing the 1987-1994 intifada uprising against the Israeli occupation.

He was also blamed for a series of deadly attacks against Israelis before the uprising, including a 1978 attack on a bus that killed 38 Israelis.

'State of Israel guilty'

"For us, it was the state of Israel which assassinated Abu Jihad," said Mahmud al-Alul, a former assistant to the PLO deputy, and now a senior official in the Fatah movement of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

the old polonium trick...

Yasser Arafat report by Swiss Institut de Radiophysique - full text

Full text of the report from the Swiss Institut de Radiophysique that says scientists found levels of polonium 18 times higher than normal in the former Palestinian leader's body

-----------------------------------------

Interesting reading (Al Jazeera copy — plain text available), including the conclusions for and against poisoning by Polonium 210... The high level of Polonium was called "unsupported" that is to say the greater part of it did not derive from the natural decay of lead 210.

Now, who would benefit from Arafat's death and have access to polonium 210?... Can Israel manufacture (extract) Polonium 210 safely and use it within its short half life, to kill someone?

Note: The toon at top was not meant to be derogatory of Arafat. It was part of a series where everyone, every leader of the world, including Netanyahu and Bush, were in that gang of the world political scene, the StarWarts of the jungle...

killing arafat...

From Robert Fisk...

I never much cared for Yasser Arafat. It wasn’t the scrubby beard or the protruding eyes or the fact that he’d done away with a few of his chums or even the way he once forbad a photographer friend from taking a picture of his bald pate. It was the histrionics, the endless carping about the “peace of the brave” – a phrase he cribbed from de Gaulle – the way in which he would go on about child casualties (“even the little babies…”) and then his endless production in interviews of an old Palestine one pound note with its denomination in Hebrew and Arabic. Surely Jew and Arab could live again together?

He made so many concessions to Israel – because he was growing old and wanted to go to “Palestine” before he died – that his political descendants are still paying for them. Arafat had never seen a Jewish colony on occupied land when he accepted the Oslo agreement. He trusted the Americans. He trusted the Israelis. He trusted anyone who appeared to say the right things. And it must have been exhausting to start his career as a super-“terrorist” in Beirut and then be greeted on the White House lawn as a super- “statesman” and then re-created by Israel as a super-“terrorist” again.
