Labor takes 6-point lead over Coalition: poll

A new opinion poll shows the
Federal Opposition has a six-point lead over the Coalition.

The Newspoll published in The
Australian newspaper reveals Labor has 53 per cent support compared to 47
per cent for the Coalition on a two-party preferred basis.

The survey also finds
satisfaction with John Howard's performance as Prime Minister has slumped
seven points to its lowest level in eight months - 43 per cent.

Mr Howard returned last week from
a trip to Indonesia and China.

The poll puts the Opposition in
an election-winning position and comes after Labor stepped up its attacks
on the Government's industrial relations laws.

Labor's primary vote has also
jumped three points to 41 per cent.

Labor deputy leader Jenny Macklin
says people are beginning to show their anger against the WorkChoices
legislation.

"They know that these IR
laws are hurting them already and they are very worried what they are
going to do to their families," she said.

Labor frontbencher Wayne Swan
says Opposition Leader Kim Beazley's promise to rip up WorkChoices and
scrap Australian Workplace Agreements (AWA) is gaining support.

"People's confidence in the policies you are putting forward
are built up over time, there is no doubt our decision to abolish
AWAs has received very favourable support throughout the
community, contrary to all the rhetoric of the Government." he said.

‘The leadership of the United States is
more unpopular in Britain than ever, a new poll has found.

The YouGov survey found that only 12 per cent
of Britons trusted Americans to deal wisely with current world problems - half
the number who had faith in the 1975 White House.

The poll found that most Britons saw America as
a cruel, vulgar, arrogant society, riven by class and racism.

They also believed it to be crime-ridden,
obsessed with money and led by an incompetent hypocrite.

American troops are failing either to win
"hearts and minds" in Iraq or bring democracy to that country,
according to respondents.

More than two-thirds of those who offered an
opinion said America was essentially an imperial power seeking world domination.

And 81 per cent said George Bush, the
president, hypocritically championed democracy as a cover for the pursuit of US
self-interests.’

Sacked mine worker to sue
A mine worker from the Hunter Valley in New South Wales, who says she was sacked last month after refusing to sign an individual contract, is taking her case to the Federal Court.

Lorissa Stevens, 21, says she was bullied by mining industry contractor Mining and Earthmoving Services (MES) and then lost her job after she refused to sign the contract.

She says she was horrified by several clauses, including one which would see her fined $200 if she took a day off sick without giving at least 12 hours notice.

A claim has been lodged in the Federal Court on behalf of Ms Stevens, who says she is upset by the experience.

"For about five years I'd been gaining ticket and qualifications to get me to a mine job like this, and for it to be ripped away as quick as it was was just disappointing, very upsetting," she said.

The case is being investigated by the Office of Workplace Services.

But Opposition Leader Kim Beazley says it is a pointless exercise.

Mr Beazley has described the case as disgraceful.

"You can investigate it all you like but the truth is most times the investigation will throw up the fact that an employer has acted illegally," he said.

Howard should be evicted for his indiscretion on BB-W

From the Independent (UK)

Axe 'stupid' Big Brother, says Howard
By Faye Bradbury
Published: 04 July 2006
John Howard, the Australian Prime Minister, called for his country's version of Big Brother to be taken off the air after a female contestant claimed that she had been sexually abused.

Police investigated the programme over the weekend after two men were evicted from the house for allegedly holding down a fellow contestant and rubbing her face in their crotches. The incident was not broadcast by Australia's Channel 10 and no charges have been brought.

Mr Howard was quick to voice his disapproval of the incident. "Here is a great opportunity for a bit of self-regulation and to get this stupid programme off the air," he told Australian radio. "It is just a question of good taste."

However the opposition Democrat senator, Andrew Bartlett, accused the Prime Minister of unnecessary intrusion. "It is politicians trying to be Big Brother that we really need to be concerned about," he said.

Yeah, Axe the war in Iraq, says Gus... If something is indecent, the war in Iraq takes the cake... At least on BB no one got killed, a big of sexism which was not very savoury... But in the BB (big bloody) War in Iraq, many people got killed for no other reason than lies by Howard following the lies of the US administration. That is far more despicable than BB bad indiscretion... Howard should resign for having mislead the Australian public and helping kill many people on our behalf...
