Hello people. Does the Campbelltown Council listen to its residents and ratepayers?? It certainly doesn't seem that way and yet we pay their wages. In the recent Council meeting 4 July:
Cr Whittaker writes "The Campbelltown CEO survived the motion below on Tuesday 4 July.
It was a feisty meeting when the 556 relies to the councils $10,000
consultation made no difference to the council's decision. The two thirds of
residents who rejected the Civic Centre and the 55% who rejected paying more
rates for it were ignored. Council staff persisted with the claim that 61%
embraced the plan although all that people had agreed to was the plans included
the things that a Civic Centre should have.
The Coffee Shop was the main topic of debate. Ten councillors ignored the
community feedback that wanted an outdoor setting attached to make it a nicer
and more profitable area, in favour of an indoor facility which can only open
during library hours which excludes most evenings, Saturday afternoons and
Sunday mornings. Councillors did not consider how much this would cost
ratepayers annually.
They also didn't consider the environmental impact of a threat of a 100
year flood.
Area Councillors then gave themselves a pay rise by getting council to
agree to the creation of committees and that they should be chaired by Area
Councillors giving them an extra $2500 per year. This system means that there
will be less accountability as the Messenger Reporter will not be present for
half of the council's meeting. Cr Amber said it was a great opportunity to "bend
the rules".
....And we pay our council rates which pay these councillors to make such decisions. This is outrageous! What about accountability. This is not good democratic local governance.
Cheers Jane Muras
