of royal buns in the oven and of kingdom's stewed prunes...

bun

This cartoon by Giles is quite torrid. Especially for the press... Giles made quite a few when Princess Beatrice was born on 8 August 1988, at 8:18 PM in The Portland Hospital for Women and Children, the first child of the Duke and Duchess of York, and fifth grandchild of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. She's currently eighth in line to the throne...

Beatrice was baptised in the Chapel Royal at St James's Palace on 20 December 1988, her godparents being: Viscount Linley (her father's cousin, now the 2nd Earl of Snowdon); the Duchess of Roxburghe (now Lady Jane Dawnay); Peter Palumbo; Gabrielle Greenall; and Carolyn Cotterell. Her name was an "unexpected" choice, though the Isle of Wight's governor once was Beatrice's namesake, Princess Beatrice, daughter of Queen Victoria...

At the wedding of Princess Eugenie, Princess Beatrice, instead of being "maid of honnor" to her sister, was put in charge by Eugenie to look after their mum, Sarah Ferguson (Fergie), to make sure she did did not steal the cuttlery — unless it was for their mum not be left alone at the back of the church.

Meanwhile the old Windsors are getting older. Time for an Australian Republic. Or at least a non-royal democracy.

put an end to the fairy tale...

The ARM argues that Australia should replace the monarchy to become a republic with an Australian head of state. It contends that the benefits of this system are a head of state that can exclusively represent Australian interests, a system that better aligns with democratic institutions, a fully independent constitution and a head of state that can represent Australian values.

Gus: Let's be a bit more ferocious about this idea. At the speed it's travelling and by the number of "in-line for the throne", we'll reach the goal by 2375... We need to put an end to the fairy tale and be a bit more bloody about it. The Orstrayan press, of course, makes its dosh by selling royal pictures, gossip and pomps. On this score, the turnaround is going to be very difficult...

the RPR...

The Royal Public Relation department:

It's the perfect Windsor Inc PR moment.

On the morning of October 15, Prince Harry and his American bride Meghan arrive in Sydney for a hotly anticipated Royal tour of Australia for the Invictus Games.

The tour kicks off with the sudden and unexpected message via Kensington Palace social media that Meghan is pregnant. The Royal baby is expected in the European spring.

The immaculately-timed announcement immediately breaks the internet. The Instagram post on the young Royals' official account, @kensingtonroyal, gets 500,000 likes inside an hour.

By 8:00 o'clock the next morning, GoogleTrends tweets that the search term, "When is spring?" has spiked.

It's the latest episode in the victory lap of a Royal family which is enjoying a remarkable renaissance — one that is media-managed within an inch of its life.

Former Royal private secretary Patrick Jephson says everything has changed from his years of working for the palace with Princess Diana, when, he says, the strategy was to lie to the public about a palace in meltdown.

"We were dealing in whatever today's truth was and the media knew that, they could smell it and on a certain level we deserved all the crazy stories that were written because, uncomfortably, lots of them were true," Mr Jephson told Four Corners.

The modern style of PR is a lot more subtle — you don't see it, but it's very complete.

"The control over what we see and read about the Royal families is pretty much controlled by them.

"And they do that through heavy investment in digital media, through a very sophisticated series of trades and favours with their favourite news outlets."

charlie-the-first will stop meddling...

Prince Charles said he will stop "meddling" in public affairs when he becomes king, telling a BBC documentary crew his role as sovereign would be very different to his life as heir to the throne.

Key points:
  • Prince says his role as heir is different to being on the throne
  • The future king is proud of his campaigning work
  • He has pledged to operate within constitutional parameters as sovereign

The prince, who will turn 70 on November 14, has been an active campaigner for causes such as wildlife conversation and climate change.

As he is not bound by the constraints imposed on his monarch mother, Prince Charles believes he can speak his mind freely, but tries to remain bipartisan.

In an interview with filmmaker John Bridcut, said he was proud of his "meddling" and explained it as the way his historical role of Prince of Wales translated in a modern world.

"Each one of my predecessors had to find out how they were going to do it — a lot of them dropped dead or were killed before they got very far," he said.

"The Black Prince was the first one and he rushed about doing all the complicated bits, fighting battles while his father sat somewhere else.

Meanwhile:

Prince Charles’s template as Prince of Wales will not be adopted by his heir, the Duke of Cambridge, it has emerged.

Prince William, while admiring of his father’s “work ethic” and “passions”, intends to do things his own way when he inherits the title and accompanying income from the Duchy of Cornwall, according to a revealing BBC documentary.

Charles, who has sought to quell concerns he would be a “meddling” king, is praised in the documentary for his charitable endeavours during his many decades carving out a role.

Asked if he believed he had established a template for the future, Charles replied: “I doubt it, I mean, you know, my eldest son, William, may want to do to it differently, slightly. I mean the whole point is it has this flexibility about it.”

William, setting out his own stall, said: “Personally, I want to be my own man, and take my own style, my own passions and my own interests, my way, and do things slightly differently.

the beeb has no sense of baby humour...

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, have become parents, welcoming their firstborn child, a son, in the morning on 6 May.

The BBC has fired broadcaster Danny Baker after he tweeted an image of a chimpanzee wearing clothes captioned "Royal Baby leaves hospital".

"Sorry my gag pic of the little fella in the posh outfit has whipped some up. Never occurred to me because, well, mind not diseased," Baker said.

Later, Danny Baker issued another apology. "Once again. Sincere apologies for the stupid unthinking gag pic earlier. Was supposed to be joke about royals vs circus animals in posh clothes but interpreted as about monkeys & race, so rightly deleted. Royal watching not my forte. Also, guessing it was my turn in the barrel," he wrote.

The baby's name is Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, not ordinary bug Joe...

Danny Baker is an English comedy writer, journalist, radio DJ and screenwriter. Since the late 1970s, he has worked for a wide range of publications and broadcasters including NME, LWT, the BBC and Talk Radio. He seems to be a left-wing republican...

Meanwhile:

However, Good Morning Britain's host Piers Morgan tweeted his disappointment, chastising the royals for the acute lack of diversity of their choice. He took umbrage with the fact that the name Archie was one of the most popular white middle-class first names.

He also called it a "striking blow for diversity and feminism".

"I guess the point he's making is that he's Meghan's son and not just Harry's son," said John Campbell on TVNZ1's Breakfast Show.

news from american comics...

According to The Sun, friends of Meghan Markle believe they know the secret behind the name chosen by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex for their firstborn son Archie.

The royal baby, claim friends of the Duchess of Sussex, was named after Meghan’s pet cat and a vintage US comic book she used to collect with her dad.

Meghan, the future Duchess of Sussex, used to constantly tell her friends about her adored pet cat Archie, who unfortunately ended up putting on excessive weight due to being fed frozen grapes, The Sun reported.

a bad joke but ...

With sensitivity to perceived racism growing all the time, how important should intent be when society punishes someone for stepping over the line?

On Wednesday, BBC radio presenter and comedian Danny Baker posted a black-and-white retro photo meme that showed a chimp accompanied by two well-dressed chaperones, with the caption “Royal baby leaves the hospital.”

If we believe that this was a joke mocking the mixed-race origins of the newborn Archie, whose mother Meghan Markle is half black, then there is clear-cut cause for dismissal. Characterizing black people as simians has a long and inglorious history.

...

While he can occasionally be opinionated, Danny Baker is a Corbyn-supporting lifelong left-winger whose 40-year broadcasting career – thousands of hours of unscripted radio chat – had previously managed to skirt a single notable racism controversy. Talking of Occam’s Razor, Baker himself wrote how inconceivable it is that he would voluntarily bring this upon himself for the sake of being edgy.

Some would say that even genuine ignorance is no defense. That a man in the public eye should be more aware of the context and impact on others of what he posts online.

But Baker’s backstory provides its own context, which the many who demanded his sacking simply chose to ignore because it makes condemning him easier.

This is not to exonerate Baker, but simply to point out that punishing language is not the same as punishing murder: there is always a grey area where you are sentencing suspects for thoughtcrime, or perhaps even catching the innocent in the dragnet.

police?...

Danny Baker is being investigated by police after a complaint was made over a tweet he made about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s newborn son, Archie, which featured a picture of a chimpanzee.

The 61-year-old DJ, who was sacked by BBC Radio 5 Live following accusations of racism, issued a statement on Friday to “formally apologise for the outrage I caused”.

The Metropolitan police confirmed a complaint was made about the Twitter post, which showed a black-and-white photo of a well-dressed couple holding the hands of a suited chimpanzee with the caption: “Royal baby leaves hospital”.

helping daddy to fess up?...

Prince Andrew’s daughter Beatrice is “in tears” over the fallout from her father’s disastrous TV interview — because she helped push for the sit-down, a new report says.

Princess Beatrice — who is the Duke of York’s elder daughter with Sarah Ferguson — encouraged the BBC interview, in which her embattled father badly fumbled while addressing his relationship with convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, during discussions about whether he should do it, according to the Mail on Sunday.

“Even though she’s their daughter, both Sarah and Andrew rely on Beatrice’s judgment a lot when it comes to dealing with the public, as she’s got an old head on young shoulders,” a source told the outlet.

The royal daughter was initially skeptical about her dad sitting down for a televised chat, but she changed her mind after she joined him and his private secretary, Amanda Thirsk, for discussions with the broadcast team, the outlet reported.

“She was asking lots of pertinent questions and had her doubts,” the source said. “But by the end of the meeting, she was convinced by the Newsnight team and Amanda Thirsk that they had no choice – that it was the only way to put all the rumors behind them.”

The princess is now devastated that she didn’t pull the brakes on the interview, which included outrageous denials by her dad and led to him reportedly being sacked by his mom, Queen Elizabeth II, from Buckingham Palace.

“Beatrice has been in tears every day since the interview went out,” a source told the outlet.

Her father announced Thursday that he’d be stepping down from his royal duties. The duke has expressed that he hopes Beatrice and her sister Princess Eugenie will replace him as patrons of his various charitable organizations, a source told The Sunday Times.

married where queen victoria's 1840...

Princess Beatrice's wedding to Eduardo Mapelli Mozzi will take place on 29 May, Buckingham Palace has announced.

They will be married at the Chapel Royal at St James Palace, with a reception later at Buckingham Palace.

The Queen will host the private reception in the palace gardens.

Beatrice, the 31-year-old daughter of the Duke of York and the Duchess of York, became engaged to her property tycoon boyfriend in Italy last September.

Buckingham Palace says that the choice of the Chapel Royal, a family chapel adjacent to the home of Princess Beatrice, is an indication of the scale and nature of the wedding.

It has been chosen by Beatrice and Mr Mapelli Mozzi, known as Edo, for its "intimate atmosphere". The chapel is also where the wedding of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert was held in February 1840.

The announcement ends weeks of speculation over the date of the wedding, amidst the scandal over Beatrice's father, Prince Andrew's relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

coronavirus delayed the wedding...

Princess Beatrice has married property tycoon Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi at a private ceremony in Windsor.

The wedding took place on Friday morning at The Royal Chapel of All Saints at Royal Lodge. It was attended by the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, along with other close relatives.

Beatrice was initially due to marry in May but coronavirus delayed the plans.

The new date had not been announced in advance and Buckingham Palace said the ceremony was "small".

The wedding took place at 11:00 BST in accordance with all relevant government guidelines, the palace said in a statement.

When the coronavirus lockdown began on 23 March, weddings in England were banned under almost all circumstances. However, since 4 July, ceremonies of up to 30 people have been allowed to take place.

The current Duke of York is Prince Andrew, the second son of Queen Elizabeth II. The present Duke's marriage produced two daughters only, and he has remained unmarried since his 1996 divorce. It therefore seems likely that the eighth creation of the title will be only the second (after Richard of Shrewsbury) not to become merged into the Crown upon the holder's accession to the role of monarch.

Prince Andrew's legal team has denied claims he is deliberately evading US authorities investigating dead convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and his former girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell.

Key points:

  • Prince Andrew's legal team say they have offered his assistance to US authorities several times
  • UK PM Boris Johnson said there has been no official approach from the US
  • Prince Andrew's friend Ghislaine Maxwell was arrested in the US on Thursday

Lawyers for the Prince, who was friends with both Epstein and Ms Maxwell, said he has offered his help a number of times and remain "utterly bewildered" by the approach of the US Department of Justice (DOJ).

It follows the arrest of Ms Maxwell at a luxury hilltop home in the US state of New Hampshire on Thursday on charges she lured underage girls for Epstein to abuse.

Last month US Attorney for Manhattan Geoffrey Berman said the Duke of York was evading efforts to question him over his contacts with Epstein and on Thursday his replacement, Audrey Strauss, told a news conference she would "welcome Prince Andrew coming in to talk with us".

But a source close to the Prince's legal work group told the ABC they had got in touch with US authorities twice in the last month but had not had any response.

"The Duke of York has offered his assistance to the DOJ investigation on a number of occasions this year," the source said.

another royal bum to feed...

Princess Beatrice, the granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth who married property developer Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi last year, is expecting a baby, Buckingham Palace says.

The baby, the first for 32-year old Beatrice, the eldest daughter of Prince Andrew and Sarah, Duchess of York, is due to be born this northern autumn.

“The Queen has been informed and both families are delighted with the news,” the Palace said in a statement on Wednesday.

The princess, the ninth-in-line to the throne, and her husband wed at Windsor Castle in July in a scaled-down private ceremony that took place without the usual pomp and fanfare of royal weddings because of COVID-19 restrictions.

A second grandchild for Prince Andrew

The baby will be a second grandchild for Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, and his ex-wife Sarah. Beatrice’s sister Eugenie gave birth to a son, August Philip Hawke Brooksbank, in February this year.

The Queen now has 10 great-grandchildren, with another — a second child for Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex — due in the summer.
