The NSW bushfire death toll has risen to 16 — including eight since Monday — after police found the body of a man at Belowra, in the state's south, yesterday.

Key points:

The total number of confirmed dead in NSW this bushfire season is 16
At least three volunteer firefighters were killed in the past two weeks while battling blazes
The latest stocktake of destruction comes amid mass evacuations on the NSW South Coast

The body has not been formally identified, however, it is believed to be that of a 72-year-old who was missing in the area.

The NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) also confirmed 449 homes had been destroyed on the South Coast since the New Year's Eve.

This takes the total number of properties destroyed this fire season to 1,365, with 501 homes damaged.

The RFS said more than 9,000 homes were saved by the efforts of firefighters across the state.

David Elliot, the embattled emergency services minister who drew furious criticism for his decision to take a European holiday amid a horror fire season, has declared he will not resign.

"I came back to step up, not step down," Mr Elliott said on Saturday morning after arriving home overnight from London, where he had planned to take a long-delayed trip with his family.

David Elliott said his absence was "inexcusable" in a Facebook post shortly after his arrival. "I should have put my RFS family first and foremost given the current conditions."
