Novak Says Libby Didn't Leak Agent's Name to Him

By David Stout

Published: February 12, 2007

WASHINGTON, Feb. 12 - The newspaper columnist Robert D. Novak testified today that two high officials in the Bush administration told him the identity of a C.I.A. agent whose unmasking touched off a scandal, but that Vice President Dick Cheney's former chief of staff, I. Lewis Libby Jr., did not.

Mr. Novak recalled in Federal District Court how former Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage and the White House political adviser Karl Rove told him the identity of the covert agent, Valerie Wilson. But, Mr. Novak said, "I got no help or no confirmation from Mr. Libby on that issue."

Former US aide Libby found guilty in CIA leak case

Lewis "Scooter" Libby, a former top aide to US Vice-President Dick Cheney, has been convicted of four counts of obstructing justice, lying and perjury during an investigation tied to the Iraq war.

Libby's attorneys say he will seek a new trial.

He was acquitted on one count of lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in the probe surrounding who leaked the identity of a Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) analyst in 2003.

He now faces a maximum of 25 years in prison.

Defence attorney Theodore Wells says if Libby is denied a new trial, he will appeal the conviction.

The jury's overwhelming verdict came on the 10th day of deliberations and was hailed by some Democrats as an appropriate rejection of the Bush's administration's case for the four-year Iraq war.

Libby verdict a black eye for White House

Playing pin the donkey...

Bush spares Libby from jail term

Lewis "Scooter" Libby was a key figure in the White House
US President George W Bush has intervened to prevent Lewis Libby, a convicted former vice-presidential aide, from serving a prison term.

President Bush described as "excessive" the 30-month prison sentence Libby was facing for having obstructed an inquiry into the leaking of a CIA agent's name.

Though no longer required to go to jail, Libby is still due to serve a period of probation and pay a fine.

Gus: The president and his hunchmen — having done the deed of exposing Valerie Plane and possibly having pushed "Scooter" to "obstruct" the inquiry into this — have acheive the goal of muking up the trails of this serious affair... So the President's "pardon" is only a half-baked fudge, as if to still keep some blame on "Scooter", giving the subliminal impression he was responsible for the whole affair, while lessening the seriousness of the real offence — treason, by releasing the identity of a spy...

paying the piper

"I respect the jury's verdict. But I have concluded that the prison sentence given to Mr Libby is excessive," Mr Bush said in a statement.

"Therefore, I am commuting the portion of Mr Libby's sentence that required him to spend 30 months in prison."

Mr Bush's decision has been condemned by the top Democrat in the US Senate.

"The President's decision to commute Mr Libby's sentence is disgraceful," Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid said in a first reaction to the move.

"Libby's conviction was the one faint glimmer of accountability for White House efforts to manipulate intelligence and silence critics of the Iraq war.

"Now, even that small bit of justice has been undone," he said in a statement.

"The Constitution gives President Bush the power to commute sentences, but history will judge him harshly for using that power to benefit his own Vice-President's chief of staff who was convicted of such a serious violation of law."

claptrap and the empire-men...

We’re an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you’re studying that reality — judiciously, as you will — we’ll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that’s how things will sort out. We’re history’s actors…and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do.”

Karl Rove

Men make their own history, but they do not make it as they please; they do not make it under self-selected circumstances, but under circumstances existing already, given and transmitted from the past. The tradition of all dead generations weighs like a nightmare on the brains of the living.”

Karl Marx

History repeats itself twice. First as Marx, then as Marx Brothers; first as Karl Marx, then as Karl Rove.”

Vladimir Golstein

Karl Marx might have been dreaming of communism, but he analyzed capitalism judiciously and thoroughly. His insights into its mechanisms and principles, such as exploitation, alienation, or complex dialectical relationship between economics, politics, and ideology; his scrutiny of the inherent and dynamic contradictions of any economic system, the contradictions that inevitably lead to the revolutionary upheavals and transformations, remain the model of insight, intuition, and sober analysis. History is a living process. We participate in it, as we participate in life: now we are the subjects, now the objects of various forces way beyond our control.

All this has to be beyond the grasp of Karl Rove. Yet, he’s obviously inherited from Karl Marx, or rather from Marx’ mindless followers, their brash voluntarism. Why bother understanding the world, when we might as well change it? Or even better, why even bother to change it, when we can just declare that the world has changed!

“Mission Accomplished!” – “Oh, yeah?” — say the critics. “All right, go, study, scrutinize judiciously, find the faults, but by that time, we’ll accomplish the similar mission in a few more Middle Eastern countries. Which you then will study judiciously…”

“History has ended,” – declared another Karlrovean, Francis Fukuyama. “No more big ideas and big confrontations, it is liberal capitalism and liberal democracy all the way.” So while we study judiciously the failures and inherent contradictions of Fukuyama’s liberal clap-trap, he goes on producing more of his BS realities. How many times has this damn thing, called history, ended? Every religion declares its end; every philosopher with universal ambitions announces it.

trump pardons Libby....

PARDON: APRIL 13, 2018

I. Lewis ‘Scooter’ Libby Jr.

I. Lewis Libby Jr. was Vice-President Dick Cheney’s top adviser before Libby was convicted in 2007 of four felony counts, including perjury and obstruction of justice, in connection with the disclosure of the identity of CIA officer Valerie Plame.

Libby had maintained his innocence for years, and his portrayal as a victim of an unfair prosecution ultimately found favor with Trump.

“I don’t know Mr. Libby,” Trump said in a statement, “but for years I have heard that he has been treated unfairly. Hopefully, this full pardon will help rectify a very sad portion of his life.”
