The height reached by Sir Richard in the rocket plane, known as Unity, was 85km (282,000ft; 53 miles).

The businessman was accompanied on the mission by the vehicle's two pilots, Dave Mackay and Michael Masucci, and three Galactic employees - Beth Moses, Colin Bennett and Sirisha Bandla.
The latter trio and Sir Richard were presented with commercial astronaut wings after the flight by former space station commander and Canadian astronaut, Chris Hadfield.

Sir Richard billed the flight as a test of the space tourism experience he expects to begin selling to customers from next year.

"I've had my notebook with me and I've written down 30 or 40 little things that will make the experience for the next person who goes to space with us that much better," he said. "The only way sometimes you can find these little things is to get in a spaceship and go to space and experience it for yourself."

Note: The REAL "edge of space" is set at 100 kms or 328,084 ft... It is defined by the Kármán line, at 62 miles. though the Federal Aviation Administration and the Air Force recognize a lower boundary for the edge of space, at 50 miles...

Blue Origin and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has congratulated fellow billionaire and Virgin founder Richard Branson on his successful suborbital flight, despite Bezos’ company earlier questioning if it counts as a space trip.

“Congratulations on the flight,” Bezos wrote on Instagram to Branson and his crew following their successful flight to space and return to Earth on Sunday.

Bezos added that he “can’t wait to join the club.”

safe landing...

The capsule carrying Jeff Bezos and the other passengers on board Blue Origin’s New Shepard has successfully landed in the west Texas desert, following the craft’s first crewed trip into space.

After briefly floating in space, the craft descended back to Earth, using parachutes to guide it back to the flat terrain of west Texas.

My sore back would have needed a pile of soft pillows to endure the landing which looks a bit brutal... Bezos' capsule went higher than Sir Branson space plane...

-------

The capsule reached a maximum altitude of around 107km (351,210ft) before starting its descent, parachuting down to a soft landing in the West Texas desert.
