Chinese government propaganda newspaper China Daily has targeted an Australian journalist’s coverage of the contested origins of the COVID-19 pandemic in a slickly-produced video published on Twitter.

The Australian senior journalist Sharri Markson has played a key role in raising the profile of the so-called lab-leak theory, which centres on the assertion that the virus leaked from the Wuhan Institute of Virology in Wuhan, China.

Once a fringe theory, it has steadily gained traction as a counter-narrative to the conclusion reached by the World Health Organisation in March that the virus likely spread to humans through animal transmission, rather than a laboratory leak. In May, US President Joe Biden asked intelligence officials to “redouble” their efforts to investigate the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic, including whether it had its origins in a laboratory accident.

China Daily, an English-language newspaper controlled by the Chinese Communist Party, this week published a video attacking Markson’s coverage, which it tweeted to its 4.2 million followers. The three minute, 42 second video shows China Daily reporters Xu-Pan Yiru and Meng Zhe attempting to discredit Markson’s reporting for News Corp outlets The Australian, The Daily Telegraphand Sky News Australia.

Markson says she is facing the attacks on her reporting because the Chinese Communist Party is worried about calls for an international investigation into a possible laboratory leak.

In the clip, China Daily reporter Xu Pan Yiru looks down the barrel of the camera and says: “If you think about the Wuhan lab-leak theory, you would probably think the US media played a major role in promoting the conspiracy.”

Then as an image of Markson flashes on the screen, she adds: “But as we look closer at the origin of COVID-19, we find actually it is an Australian journalist who has pushed the conspiracy.”

Zhe calls Markson a “social butterfly in the right wing circle” as the video shows images of Markson discussing the theory with American Fox News host Tucker Carlson and former Trump advisor Steve Bannon.

The video, made by Chinese netizens, raised several questions --

What is Fort Detrick?

Why was Fort Detrick lab closed suddenly?

Is the sudden outbreak of EVALI, influenza pandemic, and COVID-19 related to Fort Detrick?

bat woman's advice...

Earlier this year, Shi Zhengli flatly denied allegations that the Wuhan Institute of Virology conducted studies with the Chinese military after she was accused by the US of carrying out risky experiments with SARS-like coronaviruses of bat origin.

Shi Zhengli, the deputy director of Сhina's Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV), has warned that the world should brace itself to coexist with COVID-19 as the virus will continue to mutate and spread across the globe.

A top Chinese virologist, Shi was dubbed by the Chinese media "Bat Woman" for her consistent work with bat coronaviruses and included in Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People of 2020.

"We shouldn't panic, but we need to prepare to coexist with the [corona] virus in the long term", Shi said in an interview with the Chinese media on Wednesday.

The virologist added that "as the number of infected cases has just become too big, this allowed the novel coronavirus more opportunities to mutate and select", predicting that "new variants will continue to emerge" and calling for more people to get vaccinated.

She spoke after WIV grabbed global headlines once again earlier this week, when CNN reported that US intelligence agencies hacked cloud servers containing data related to coronavirus samples studied at the WIV lab.

The Chinese language data, which is reportedly yet to be deciphered, could be a key to revealing the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to CNN.

In late May, US President Joe Biden gave his country's intelligence agencies 90 days to obtain and analyse more information on the virus' origins, also vowing to prod China to "participate in a full, transparent, evidence-based international investigation and to provide access to all relevant data and evidence".

This was preceded by the World Health Organisation (WHO) releasing the full version of its report on the issue, in which the WHO questioned the scenario of COVID-19 being leaked from from a laboratory. The report also suggested that the virus was most likely transmitted to humans from bats via another animal.

Top Chinese Virologist Denies COVID Cooperation With Chinese Military

As far as Shi is concerned, the virologist previously rejected the US media's allegations that she collaborated with the Chinese military on SARS-like coronavirus-related experiments.

Earlier this year, NBC News referred to Shi's alleged collaboration on coronavirus research with military scientist Ton Yigang in 2018 and with Zhou Yusen, another military scientist who has now been listed as deceased, in 2019.

The news network also cited David Asher, a former State Department adviser as saying he is "confident" that the Chinese military was funding a "secret programme" involving coronaviruses. In January 2020, Asher co-authored a fact sheet on activity inside the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

research centers...

There’s been a lot of complaints lately about America’s continued activity in the field of biological weapons development, as there’s a growing list of reasons for those complaints to appear. One of the primary ones is the ongoing activity of more than 400 military biological laboratories created by the United States in 25 countries, including former Soviet republics – Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan.

Although US politicial figures try to convince the rest of the world that those are merely “research centers” where American specialists help local scientists develop ways to combat dangerous diseases, Washington carefully supresses any information about what is actually taking place inside those military facilities. Elected officials of the above-mentioned have no real idea what goes on inside behind closed doors. The US centers deployed across those countries and the research facility at Fort Detrick’s military base, where Pentagon lab-coats have been working on weaponizng biology for decades are one and the same.

Suspicions about the involvement of foreign US bio-laboratories in the emergence of very strange diseases in the countries where such secret facilities exist are growing.

Thus, on July 30, Channel One Eurasia, a local Kazakh television station, reported an unexpected mass death of livestock from an unknown disease in two regions of Kazakhstan. In particular, livestock deaths were registered in the North-Kazakhstan region. Veterinarians speculate that this disease is blackleg, or emphysematous carbuncle, which has not been seen in this land for a very long time. The infection primarily affects young, immature animals that cannot yet be vaccinated due to their age. Mass mortality of livestock also occurs in the neighboring Akmola Region: in the villages of Azat and Karabulak, more than 500 heads of livestock fell ill.

Experts note that in recent years, epidemics of either unknown diseases or old, almost forgotten diseases considered to have been eradicated have periodically broken out in various regions of Kazakhstan. As a result, cattle are dying en masse. The public associates this with the American military biolab, located in Alma-Ata and whose activities remain out of the scope of formal ovesight not only of Kazakhstan, but international scientific circles as well.

Recall that in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic, Russia and China have highlighted the need to check similar facilities worldwide. However, the US ignored it. In mid-July, the Socialist Movement of Kazakhstan, the Unified Communist Party of Georgia, the Socialist Party of Latvia, and the Communist Party of Pakistan launched a joint initiative to sign a petition against the production and distribution of biological weapons and for the closure of US military biological laboratories.

This initiative was motivated to a large extent that over a dozen similar facilities operate in post-Soviet countries. The Central Reference Laboratory Inc was built several years ago in Alma-Ata with American money and is used by the Pentagon. Earlier, some Kazakhstani media tried to draw attention this topic. Last year, at a time of a raging coronavirus pandemic, high mortality, and strict quarantine in Kazakhstan, a popular local newspaper reminded readers that, according to Washington’s official statement, one of the purposes of the very American Central Reference Laboratory located in Alma-Ata is to combat the spread of dangerous infections. In this regard, Kazakhstan justifiably wondered: where is this fight?

The fact that the US has never stopped producing biological weapons, contrary to all international conventions, is no secret. And this is confirmed: there is the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or DARPA in the Pentagon, which is engaged in developing and implementing the most advanced technologies in the military sphere. And it has a biotechnology department that does just that. The US Defense Department admits that their technology is dual-use. However, under US law, certain types of experiments are prohibited in the United States due to the threat they pose to the local population. This means that they are held abroad, including in the former Soviet Union area.

In October 2018, the American Journal of Science released an article titled “Agricultural Research or a New Biological Weapons System?” In this article, German and French microbiologists, concerned about the growing number of such laboratories near the borders of Russia and China, expressed the view that the US was preparing for a bacteriological war, thousands of kilometers away from their own borders. This article talked about a Pentagon program called Insect Allies, which involves major biological experiments and experiments whose results could be used for military purposes.

One of the first to speak out against foreign laboratories in Kazakhstan was Amirbek Togusov, former Kazakh Deputy Defense Minister who handed over to Russia materials about the US military’s experiments with deadly viruses in the summer of 2020.

“We are like test monkeys here, and our territory is the Pentagon’s natural proving ground for testing new viruses… The laboratories are taken out of national control and work in secrecy,”General Amirbek Togusov said at the time. Shortly after that, General Togusov “died suddenly and unexpectedly.”

But this topic was picked up by many representatives of the Kazakhstani public, who stated, in particular, that the source of the COVID-19 epidemic in the republic was the same American biolab in Alma-Ata. These statements received wide public response, although the Kazakh authorities did their best to prevent their replication and even opened more than 100 criminal cases against the initiators of such comments.

The position of the Kazak authorities on the “laboratory issue” has been constantly changing over the past year. It was even stated that there were no “foreign researchers” working there.  However, the fact that US military personnel is employed  at the Center for Highly Hazardous Infections has been openly acknowledged even by the administration of the research center itself, which announced in April 2021 that it continues to work with CH2M Hill Constructors, Inc, a firm representing the US Department of Defense, a part of the Jacobs Engineering military corporation. CH2M worked in Kazakhstan under a contract with the Defense Threat Prevention Agency (DTRA) to manage and support facilities established under the Pentagon’s Cooperative Biological Engagement Program (CBEP). DTRA invested 400 million dollars to establish biological laboratories in Kazakhstan. The extent of the Pentagon’s involvement in CH2M’s operations is revealed by the fact a US Army Corps of Engineers officer, Eric Graham, who took part in the construction of the American military biolab in Georgia, listed as a head of one of its branches.

According to publicly available US sources, DTRA has been conducting reserach in Kazakhstan since at least 2005. There are now six biological facilities there, created with Pentagon money as part of the CBEP project, which CH2M and Jacobs are responsible for managing. Many Kazakhstanis suspect that several epidemics in the country were triggered by researchers at these closed facilities. However, nobody so far has managed to provide a confirmation of those fears, and Washington is doing its best to keep activities a secret.

In May 2020, Sergei Lavrov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation criticized the US for refusing to be transparent about bio laboratories. He pointed out that the American refusal to support creating a verification mechanism in the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production and Stockpiling of Bacteriological (Biological) and Toxin Weapons makes one wonder about Washington’s actual goals.

NEWLY RELEASED DOCUMENTS provide details of U.S.-funded research on several types of coronaviruses at the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China. The Intercept has obtained more than 900 pages of documents detailing the work of EcoHealth Alliance, a U.S.-based health organization that used federal money to fund bat coronavirus research at the Chinese laboratory. The trove of documents includes two previously unpublished grant proposals that were funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, as well as project updates relating to EcoHealth Alliance’s research, which has been scrutinized amid increased interest in the origins of the pandemic.

The documents were released in connection with ongoing Freedom of Information Act litigation by The Intercept against the National Institutes of Health. The Intercept is making the full documents available to the public.

“This is a road map to the high-risk research that could have led to the current pandemic,” said Gary Ruskin, executive director of U.S. Right To Know, a group that has been investigating the origins of Covid-19.

One of the grants, titled “Understanding the Risk of Bat Coronavirus Emergence,” outlines an ambitious effort led by EcoHealth Alliance President Peter Daszak to screen thousands of bat samples for novel coronaviruses. The research also involved screening people who work with live animals. The documents contain several critical details about the research in Wuhan, including the fact that key experimental work with humanized mice was conducted at a biosafety level 3 lab at Wuhan University Center for Animal Experiment — and not at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, as was previously assumed. The documents raise additional questions about the theory that the pandemic may have begun in a lab accident, an idea that Daszak has aggressively dismissed.

of pathogen labs...

One chilly morning in February 2017, a tall Chinese scientist in his 50s named Yuan Zhiming showed Bernard Cazeneuve, then the French prime minister, around Wuhan’s new high-security pathogen lab.

Built with French engineering, it was China’s first P4 lab, one of several dozen in the world with that highest security designation. Yuan, the director of the lab, had worked for more than a decade to make it a reality.

Yuan and his colleagues at the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) hoped they could help prevent another catastrophe like the SARS outbreak in 2003, which embarrassed Beijing and resulted in the dismissal of the health minister.

But just a couple of years after the P4 lab’s ribbon-cutting, China was engulfed in a far deadlier outbreak. Yuan’s team hadn’t prevented it. And worse, some suspected they might have been involved in its genesis.

Yuan has vociferously denied that the WIV had any part in the coronavirus pandemic’s origins. “The Wuhan P4 lab has never seen any laboratory leaks or human infections since it began operating in 2018,” Yuan said at a news conference in July.

Amid the scrutiny, the WIV has turned inward. Yuan said at the news conference that his team took a virus database offline because of “the large number of malicious attacks,” and that they are under great pressure from rumours.

US intelligence agencies said in a report last month that the virus was not a biological weapon, and that it’s unclear whether it originated naturally or from a laboratory-associated incident. The report said confirmation is unlikely without China’s co-operation, which Beijing withdrew in July.

For Yuan and his team, it means the cloud of suspicion lingers. After their high hopes, it’s a disappointment.

“Scientific collaboration in virology – it’s gone,” said a foreign researcher who has worked for years with the WIV and who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the hostile political climate. “Now, the Chinese will not welcome foreigners because their view is you’re coming in to dig dirt.”

This account of the WIV’s 65-year history, its coronavirus research and its P4 lab is based on interviews with visiting scientists, lab audit reports, satellite images, archival records and other documentation. The WIV did not respond to requests for comment.

‘Best of the best’

The P4 lab is located off an eight-lane road in Wuhan’s southern industrial outskirts, where factories give way to low mountains and farmland. The lab facilities cover roughly two football fields, on a tract of land 12 times as large, according to a June 2018 environmental safety audit report.

The building’s austere gray lines are softened by trees: From 2005 to 2015, when the lab was under construction, scientists would drive out on Arbor Day to add a few more saplings to the perimeter.

Based on the French P4 lab in Lyon, the building has four floors: waste management at the bottom; experimental labs and animal rooms on the main floor; and on the top two, apparatuses to ensure safe airflow, the report says.

Visitors called it state-of-the-art, in contrast to other, ageing WIV buildings, where scientists wore coats indoors in winter because of scant heating.

The lab had “the newest technology, a huge complex,” recalled Boris Klempa, a Slovak Academy of Sciences researcher who visited in 2017.

In an article published on 23 September 2021, The Intercept features a grant request submitted in 2018 by the EcoHealth Alliance to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) [1]. It contains a clear indication of this organization’s intention to engineer a laboratory-based virus using bat coronaviruses [2].

Moreover, former economic adviser to President Donald Trump, Peter Navarro, has also revealed that Dr. Anthony Fauci funnelled US public funds through the EcoHealth Alliance to finance research – declared illegal in the United States – being carried out by the P4 laboratory in Wuhan, China.

EcoHealth Alliance director Peter Daszak is the main sponsor of the petition, published in The Lancet [3], in support of Wuhan health workers unjustly accused of being responsible for the Covid-19 epidemic. Peter Daszak was also a member of the WHO Wuhan Information Mission.

On 4 September 2021, Alex Jones (InfoWars) broadcast two clips from a video, which had aired on C-SPAN public network in October 2019, showing a roundtable discussion on the creation of a universal influenza vaccine [4].

Experts thrashed out the need to
modify the authorization procedure for influenza vaccines,
change the method of producing influenza vaccines, and
replace it with messenger RNA technology.

They recognized that the pharmaceutical industry would not tag along because influenza is not a frightening disease.

Then Dr. Anthony Fauci concluded, in essence, that it would take a shock, an epidemic of a far deadlier kind of flu, for the pharmaceutical industry and humanity to move forward.

Anthony Fauci has served since 1984 as the director of the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. He was assistant to Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and was active in 2004 in his project for the confinement of healthy people against a hypothetical biological attack. He is a member of “Red Dawn” [5], the group that promoted the implementation of the plan to lockdown healthy people during the Covid-19 epidemic. He was appointed by President Donald Trump to the White House Coronavirus Task Force and continues in that post under by President Joe Biden.

fair covid investigation...

Beijing will take a strong stance against any form of “political manipulation” that may arise during the recently announced renewed probe by the World Health Organization (WHO) to determine the origins of the coronavirus.

Speaking on Thursday, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Zhao Lijian said that the government hopes all parties involved in the inquiry will “adopt an objective, scientific and responsible attitude… adhere to a global perspective, perform their duties in an objective and fair manner, and truly make a positive contribution to global origins-tracing and anti-epidemic cooperation.”

He insisted that while China will continue to support and participate in tracing the origins of Covid-19, it will “firmly oppose any form of political manipulation.”

Zhao’s remarks come a day after the WHO unveiled a list of proposed experts on its Scientific Advisory Group for the Origins of Novel Pathogens, known by the acronym SAGO, to determine where the virus started.

WHO Executive Director Dr Michael Ryan stressed the importance of the probe, saying that it was our “best chance” – and potentially the last – to understand the origins of Covid.

Maria van Kerkhove, WHO technical lead on Covid-19, noted that “more than three dozen recommended studies” must still be carried out, and indicated that missions may need to take place on Chinese soil, requiring Beijing’s cooperation.
