a burning issue….

In the fray of the Australian federal elections, the climate seems to have taken a front seat with the winning “teal” independents and most of Labor members…

One has to acknowledge that coal is still the main driver of world energy supply as well as the worst culprit for inducing global warming. Not coal's fault but our burning it....

The weather in Sydney, Australia, has been a weird one for 4 months (and more if we count the bushfires of two years ago with temperatures beyond belief). The first third of 2022 has been below average temperature and higher than average humidity… Summer was like a wet warm winter. This year is currently the wettest on record for year-to-April rainfall totals. The current rainfall received in Sydney from January to April 2022 is higher than the median Annual rainfall for all years between 1900 and 2022…. And it has not stopped raining in May.

What has been driving this strange circumstance is a combination of three factors which compete and eventually combine:

First, we know that we are in a “La Niña” event. This is the cool cycle of our general weather patterns, as opposed to El Niño…

Second, global warming is still part of the equation, despite the cool and humid conditions that we are feeling today.

As the planet has officially reached 420 ppm of CO2 in the atmosphere, don’t expect any let-up. WE ARE NOT ON TARGET TO LIMIT THE RISE OF GLOBAL TEMPERATURE BY 2º C in 2050.

Third, the volcanic eruption of Hunga Ha'apai in Tonga in January 2022 has added a temporary extra cooling factor. This, in comparison to the Krakatoa eruption, was small potatoes. Compared to Mt Pinatubo, the Tongan volcano, could have been a greater eruption but had far less "cooling" sulphur dioxide in the plume of ash.

It is to be noted that meteorologists have indicated that this volcano's cloud would have “cooled” the weather locally. Most likely this small amount of cooling would have added to the greater “La Niña” effect. Warmer seas plus cooler air tends to help the formation of heavily laden rain clouds. Some plants die from root drowning....

So, when the “La Niña” event fades out to be replaced by El Niño, on could expect a quick rise of average temperatures in Australia, with high humidity but no rain along the coast, and a massive drought inland. It is hard to know when this change of pattern will happen but meteorologists predict this by September 2022. good luck....

WE NEED TO BE READY.

Global warming is still here.
