dutton of the middle ultra right CONservative…..Peter Dutton has issued a rallying cry to a devastated Liberal Party, promising to bring together moderate and conservative wings fractured by the election loss and vowing to take the fight to Labor on the economy. Dutton formally confirmed on Wednesday he will stand for the leadership of the Liberals as he warned “things are going to be tough under Labor – higher interest rates, cost of living, inflation and electricity prices”. “Labor talked a big game on the economy. They now have to deliver and we will hold them to account,” he said in a statement. Liberal MP for NSW Sussan Ley is the front-runner to be Dutton’s deputy, ahead of senators Jane Hume and Anne Ruston, while Angus Taylor and Stuart Robert are positioning for the treasury portfolio. But Dutton and his team will have a mountain to climb, with the election of Labor’s James Scullin in 1929 the last time a major party served just one term on the government benches.

a tactical error?…...
Senior Liberals concede it was a tactical error that the election wasn’t called late last year (“Liberals wanted Morrison dumped”, May 25). We then endured Scott Morrison’s posturing and game playing about the possible date, leading to a phoney election campaign for weeks on end. Little wonder many voters feel politicians are only interested in themselves. Australians deserve better.

It strikes me that Josh Frydenberg, a potentially moderating influence within the Liberal Party and possible PM, like some sacrificial lamb was inexplicably prepared to gut himself through loyalty to Morrison on the altar of the latter’s relentless hubris.

How low have we sunk when loyalty becomes a liability?
George Fishman, Vaucluse
Frydenberg, out of loyalty and principle, declined to turn against his boss. It probably cost him his seat and possibly the PM job as well. The treasurer before him had no such qualms in dumping his boss, even after a public profession of loyalty.
