Biden’s teleprompter 'Absolutely Believes' There is No Need for New Cold War With China

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) – US President Joe Biden expressed confidence on Monday after his first face-to-face presidential summit with China's Xi Jinping at the G20 in Bali. Following the meeting, he claimed that there need not be a new cold war with China.

“I absolutely believe there need not be a new cold war,” Biden told reporters after the talks.

He also expressed confidence that Beijing has no intention to invade Taiwan.

“I do not think there is any imminent attempt on the part of China to invade Taiwan,” Biden added.

The US president also noted that China has an obligation to try to make it clear to North Korea that they should not engage in long-range missile tests.

"I've made it clear to [Chinese President] Xi [Jinping] that China has an obligation to try to make it clear to North Korea that they shouldn't engage in long-range tests", he added.

‘At Least It Was Polite’: Observers See Few Groundbreaking Moments in Xi-Biden Meeting

The Monday meeting between the American and Chinese leaders in Bali, Indonesia, ahead of the Group of 20 summit didn’t break much new ground, experts told Sputnik, but if the two nations stick to their promises to increase cooperation and communication, it could steer the world away from disaster in the near term.

For about 3 hours and 20 minutes on Monday in Bali, Indonesia, US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping held their first in-person meeting as heads of state. While the two superpower leaders did not issue a joint statement, according to the separate readouts each nation issued, their discussions ranged across a wide variety of topics, but focused on central themes of widening communications and avoiding open conflict between them.

When Biden revealed the scheduled meeting last week, he told reporters that "What I want to do with him when we talk is lay out what kind of, what each of our red lines are,” figure out if they conflict, "And if they do, how to resolve and how to work it out."

Thomas W. Pauken II, the author of "US vs China: From Trade War to Reciprocal Deal," a consultant on Asia-Pacific affairs, and a geopolitical commentator, told Sputnik on Monday that Washington and Beijing had no reason to not have begun these talks months ago, and that the lack of communication was causing serious problems.

“Basically, what actually happened there, both sides were talking about their opinions or their perspective from their side. So, China tried to defend its side and the US tried to defend their side,” he explained.

“At least it was done in a polite manner. It did not turn into a fireworks show, so that's a good thing,” Pauken noted. “But at the same time, I don't see as if there's not going to be much accomplished."

"Because even if there's talks, some dialogue going on right now, how come there were not these kinds of talks and dialogues going on last year or a few months ago? Biden could have visited China or Xi could have visited the US. Why were these types of trips not occurring? I find that rather odd. Basically, they're just using G20 to get everything started. But at the same time, this should have been done much earlier,” he continued.

On the question of “red lines,” which Biden said he and Xi would discuss, Pauken predicted that for the US it would “probably be about Taiwan,” and for China “it could be in regards to the issues of some of these, perhaps, trade issues that the US is trying to push ahead on blocking semiconductors and chips, decoupling the economic, decoupling of China.”

During their meeting in Indonesia on Monday, US President Joe Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping said the two countries should cooperate better to meet the world’s expectations and agreed that nuclear war should never be fought, according to the White House.

In brief remarks before the bilateral discussion, Biden said the two countries needed to show the world they can manage their differences and “find ways to work together on urgent global issues,” including climate change and “food insecurity.”

“History is the best textbook. We should take it as a mirror and let it guide the future,” Xi said, adding that current relations between the US and China are “not in the fundamental interests of our two countries and peoples,” and that the international community expects both leaders to improve that.

“A statesman should think about and know where to lead his country. He should also think about and know how to get along with other countries and the wider world,” Xi said.

Monday afternoon’s meeting, which took place on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Bali, was the first for both leaders since Biden became the US president in 2021. Biden reminded Xi they had met many times while he was vice-president, while the Chinese leader noted their last in-person encounter was at the World Economic Forum in Davos, in 2017.

During their ensuing conversation, Biden told Xi the US intends to “continue to compete vigorously” with China, but does not intend this to “veer into conflict,” according to the White House’s readout. The two countries “must work together” to address transnational issues “because that is what the international community expects,” Biden added.

The US president “raised concerns” about human rights in China, and told Xi the US policy on Taiwan has not changed. However, he objected to Beijing’s “coercive and increasingly aggressive actions,” and brought up China’s “non-market economic practices.” Biden also addressed the issue of “wrongfully detained”Americans, according to the readout. He condemned North Korea and repeated his “ironclad commitment” to defend allies in the “Indo-Pacific.”

It was Biden who brought up the conflict in Ukraine, condemning Russia and alleging it had made “irresponsible threats” to use atomic weapons – something Moscow has repeatedly denied, accusing Western media of misinterpretation.

The US and Chinese leaders “reiterated their agreement that a nuclear war should never be fought and can never be won, and underscored their opposition to the use or threat of use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine,” the White House said.

Two sides reach consensus in key areas, commit to more exchanges after leaders meet

President Xi Jinping and United States President Joe Biden agreed on Monday to take concrete steps to put bilateral ties back on the track of stable development, as the two sides reached consensus on key issues such as climate change, trade, public health, agriculture and food security.

The two leaders had a meeting of about three hours on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Bali, their first sit-down since Biden took office in January 2021.

Both nations pledged to enable their diplomatic teams to maintain strategic communications and frequent consultations as well as dialogue and coordination on macroeconomic policies, economy and trade, according to a summary of the meeting.

They both highlighted the significance of people-to-people exchanges between China and the US, pledging to expand the exchanges in personnel in various areas.

In his opening remarks, Xi highlighted the joint responsibility he and Biden had in anchoring the future direction of bilateral relations and placing ties on the right track.

"I look forward to working with you, Mr President, to bring China-US relations back to the track of healthy and stable growth to the benefit of our two countries and the world as a whole," Xi said.

He pointed out that the current state of China-US relations is not in the fundamental interests of the two countries and their people, and is not what the international community expects.

China-US relations should not be a zero-sum game where one side outcompetes or thrives at the expense of the other, and the success of both nations should be seen as opportunities, instead of challenges, for each other, Xi said.

The world is big enough to accommodate the respective development and common prosperity of both nations, he added.

He called upon the two sides to put each other's domestic and foreign policies, as well as strategic intentions, in the right perspective, saying that bilateral interactions should be defined by dialogue and win-win cooperation, not confrontation and zero-sum competition.

ETC ETC....

This report tends to betray what so far has been an aggressive mood from the USA. The USA is trying hard (and plays dirty) to prevent China's "economy" becoming more important than that of the US (NOTE: CHINA'S ECONOMY IS ALREADY BIGGER IN TERMS OF VALUE BUT NOT IN TERMS OF "DOLLARS"). Even Joe Biden's teleprompter said something like "aggressively competitive" rather than cooperation. Scientific magazines always complain about the way Chinese scientists are treated in the US. Meanwhile, B52s armed with nuclear bombs are on their way to Australia in order to show China some more AUKUS muscles, already being inflated with nuclear submarines contracts. SO I WON'T CHANGE THE CARTOON....

Beijing will cooperate with Moscow to build a multipolar world, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Tuesday, after meeting his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Bali, Indonesia.

“China is ready to work with Russia and other like-minded countries to promote the development of a multipolar world, firmly support the democratization of international relations, and defend the international system based on the United Nations,” he said, according to remarks posted by the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

Wang’s phrasing echoes statements made by Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese leader Xi Jinping, when they met in Beijing in early February. Putin had also said that he and Xi “hold largely the same views on addressing the world’s problems.”

In a cordial meeting with his Russian colleague on Tuesday, Wang also said Beijing would “continue to take an objective and fair stand” on the conflict in Ukraine and “play a constructive role in facilitating peace talks.”
