It's complicated. Democratically, we are most likely to be swindled daily by the rich. They have their playground and we have ours. We may not be affected directly by Jeffrey Epstein's sexual antics, but we can be affected directly by Bill Gates' manipulations (philanthropic) of food, sex (genderisation) and pantomime pandemics.

When my book on Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell was published two years ago, some of my Jewish friends praised my reporting for telling the disturbing story of this couple I termed a “predatory Bonnie and Clyde.” And those same friends couldn’t help but acknowledge that, in their view, Epstein brought shame to the Jewish community.

Comparisons were made to Bernie Madoff — and to Harvey Weinstein, a one-time Epstein pal until they had a falling out over a young woman.

When Epstein was arrested in 2019 on federal charges of sex trafficking minors in New York and Florida, only to later commit suicide behind bars at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan while awaiting trial, an Israeli newspaper, Haaretz, wrote that Leslie Wexner, the founder and then chairman of L Brands (which included Victoria’s Secret, The Limited and Abercrombie & Fitch), was a prominent philanthropist “seen as a champion of Jewish learning and ethical teaching,” and questioned how he could “end up so enmeshed and enamored with a future convicted sex offender and alleged sex trafficker.”

I was one of the journalists interviewed by the series’ director, Matt Tyrnauer, who told me for this article: “What I found in producing the series was that there was a pattern of Epstein making close associations with powerful Jewish businessmen throughout his career. And it kind of had shades of Bernie Madoff to it where there was a certain world within a world in the New York City money culture. Epstein was a con man who was able to use his Jewish identity to infiltrate and exploit. It’s clearly another example of how clever and nefariously resourceful Epstein was.”

Steven Hoffenberg learned that the hard way. He hired Epstein to work for his Towers Financial Corp. in New York in 1987. That association, he claimed, led Hoffenberg to serve a prison sentence for securities fraud and tax evasion.

“Jeffrey exploited his Judaism, very much so,” Hoffenberg told me. “In fact, he confirmed to me that he had strong Jewish roots and used those roots to help get what he wanted in making connections. Epstein was a master manipulator. He used his Jewish faith to seduce me, Wexner, Leon Black and even Ghislaine’s father Robert Maxwell, who was a huge booster of Israel.”

Epstein played on Maxwell’s sympathies that he too had lost many family members in the Holocaust and dangled his supposed connections to Israeli intelligence to line his pockets with money from Maxwell in exchange for allegedly helping the Fleet Street publisher hide assets in numerous offshore bank accounts in the 1980s.

When Maxwell died mysteriously in 1991, his daughter Ghislaine almost immediately — and just as mysteriously — ended up with Epstein in New York.

But it was Wexner, the Ohio-based billionaire known as the “Merlin of the Mall,” who hired the two-time college dropout in the mid-1980s to manage his money — and later shockingly gave him power of attorney.

Wexner was Epstein’s “Big Fish,” and similar to Hoffenberg and Maxwell, Brooklyn-born Epstein traded on his Jewishness and his support for Israel to insinuate himself in Wexner’s world, eventually stealing some $46 million from him, according to Wexner’s accounting. Epstein also wormed his way into a trustee position for the Wexner Foundation, one of the most prominent private Jewish charities in the world, for at least six years, according to The Forward, citing available tax records.

Mary Erdoes, a top lieutenant to Chief Executive Jamie Dimon, made two trips to Epstein’s townhouse on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, in 2011 and 2013, when Epstein still was a client of the bank, said the people familiar with the matter. She exchanged dozens of emails with him and discussed sharing with him fees related to a charitable fund the bank was considering launching, the people said.
