We're falling behind.

Last week, the UN released a report on its first global stocktake, which is designed to measure progress on the Paris Agreement, an international treaty adopted in 2015 to limit warming to below 2C.

While the stocktake found progress had been made, there was still a huge gap between commitments and what countries were actually doing to achieve them.

"Against forecasts made prior to its adoption, the Paris Agreement has led to contributions that significantly reduce forecasts of future warming, yet the world is not on track to meet the long-term goals of the Paris Agreement," the report found.

"Global emissions are not in line with modelled global mitigation pathways consistent with the temperature goal of the Paris Agreement.

"And there is a rapidly narrowing window to raise ambition and implement existing commitments in order to limit warming to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels."

That's why UN Secretary General António Guterras was again calling for an acceleration of the phase out of fossil fuels.

"The move from fossil fuels to renewables is happening but we are decades behind," he said.

"We must make up time lost to foot dragging, arm twisting and the naked greed of entrenched interest raking in millions from fossil fuels."

 Which countries are falling behind? 

On the same day the United Kingdom didn’t attend the Climate Ambition Summit, its Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced a major U-turn on key climate targets. 

That included pushing back the deadline for the end of new petrol and diesel car sales, and scrapping energy efficiency requirements for landlords. 

"When our share of global emissions is less than 1 per cent, how can it be right that British citizens are now being told to sacrifice even more than others?" Mr Sunak said on Wednesday.

A climate of insanity

Inherent in the nature of insanity is the fact that those inflicted by it are unaware of their mental state.

As the emission of greenhouse gases continues, global warming accelerates, bushfires and floods engulf the planet, new fossil fuel projects are subsidised, climate science is ignored, climate change projections are kept away from the public eye, nations invest in killer submarines rather than water spraying aircraft and other fire-fighting equipment, politicians talk about clean coal, radioactive waters are spilled into the ocean, nuclear weapons are readied for a MAD scenario, the media reports sugar-coated part-truth or untruths, politicians routinely betray their pledges and playboy billionaires fire rockets at space with plan to settle on Mars.

Inherent in the nature of insanity is the fact that those inflicted by it are unaware of their mental state, nor do crowds of people, or for that matter political parties, and business elites, leading populations to catastrophe, from the scale of Jonestown all the way to Auschwitz, Korea, Viet Nam, Iraq and Afghanistan, the list goes on.

This has now reached a planet-wide scale. According to James Hansen, NASA’s former chief climate scientist, global temperature in the current El Nino is exceeding the previous El-Nino (2015-16) temperature rise rate of 0.18°C/per decade, representing the current increase of the Earth’s Energy Imbalance (EEI), with accelerated heating (Figure 1). The change is related in part to the decrease in the cooling effect of human-emitted aerosols. Leaders from around the world are meeting in New York this week for the UN Climate Ambition Summit. The purpose is to check on progress towards a “more equitable renewable-energy based, climate-resilient global economy”. John Thwaitesreports.

The latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report (March 2023) stated that “there are multiple, feasible and effective options to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to human-caused climate change, and they are available now.”

However, the gap between ambition and actions, including in our region, does not bode well.

The Asia-Pacific’s greenhouse gas emissions keep rising and in some respects the region is going backwards. And Australia leads the way as the biggest emitter per capita in our region. Each person in Australia emits 15.4 tonnes of CO2 annually, according to 2020 figures from ‘Our World in Data’. That is more than three times the world average of 4.7 tonnes.
