Resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict will not be quick or easy and will require Kiev to face the issue of territory, French President Emmanuel Macron has warned.

Speaking to an annual conference of ambassadors at the Elysee Palace on Monday, Macron addressed a number of global issues, including the conflict between Moscow and Kiev.

“The Ukrainians need to hold a realistic discussion on the territorial questions and only they can do that,” the French president said.
“The United States of America has to help us change the nature of the situation and convince Russia to come to the negotiating table,” while the European members of NATO have the responsibility to craft security guarantees for Ukraine, Macron added.

While no specific peace proposal has been made public, rumors in the media have suggested that US President-elect Donald Trump intends to propose a ceasefire that would “freeze” the conflict along the current front line. Some Western governments have sought to handle Kiev’s expected objections to this by offering Ukraine security guarantees, while stopping short of NATO membership.

The French president also warned that there is “no quick and easy solution” in Ukraine, even though Trump has pledged to end the conflict swiftly once he takes office.

Continued support for Kiev is vital for the “credibility” of the West, which would be “undermined” by any compromises brought about by “Ukraine fatigue,” Macron told the diplomats in Paris.

“The new American president himself knows that the US has no chance of winning anything if Ukraine loses,”Macron said, adding that “capitulation of Ukraine cannot be good for Europeans and Americans.”

Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky has outlawed any talks with Russia so long as President Vladimir Putin is in office and has insisted on a “peace platform” that would see a unilateral Russian withdrawal from all territories claimed by Kiev, payment of reparations, and war crimes prosecutions.

Moscow has dismissed Zelensky’s proposal as delusional. Russia’s terms for ending the hostilities insist on Ukraine becoming neutral, demilitarized and “denazified,” while accepting the “new territorial realities”on the ground and guaranteeing all the rights of ethnic Russians and Russian-speakers. Any peace will also require the removal of all Western sanctions on Russia as well, the Kremlin has said.

Ten Ukrainian tanks destroyed in Kursk Region – Russian MOD
Kiev’s latest advance into the country has been stopped, the MOD has said

 

Russian forces have crushed Kiev’s latest attempt to expand its military foothold in the Kursk Region, destroying ten Ukrainian tanks along with several other armored vehicles in a counteroffensive, the Defense Ministry has said. 

In a statement on Monday, military officials in Moscow said Russian troops “continue to rout the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ formations in the Kursk Region.”

According to the ministry, the Ukrainian advance focused on the town of Bolshoye Soldatskoye, and Russian forces have destroyed Kiev’s main strike group with the support of the Air Force and artillery.

In the past 24 hours, the Ukrainian military has lost a total 485 troops, ten tanks, seven infantry fighting vehicles, five armored personnel carriers, an artillery gun, an electronic warfare system and multiple other vehicles in Kursk Region, the statement reads.

In a separate briefing on Sunday, the Russian Defense Ministry said Ukrainian forces had launched the assault earlier that day in the hope of “stopping the advance of Russian troops.”

Ukrainian troops crossed into the internationally recognized Russian territory in early August 2024. The leadership in Kiev stated that the incursion was meant to divert Moscow’s forces from elsewhere along the front line. However, Russia’s offensive in Donbass has continued unabated, with the area under Ukrainian control in Kursk Region also shrinking considerably since then.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry’s estimates, since the start of its operation, Kiev has lost nearly 50,000 servicemen, 273 tanks, 209 infantry fighting vehicles, 153 armored personnel carriers, and hundreds of other pieces of equipment, including 13 US-supplied HIMARS multiple rocket launchers.

During his end-of-year press conference last month, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed confidence that Ukrainian troops will “undoubtedly” be driven out of Kursk Region.

France cannot ensure Ukraine's "strongest possible position" on the battlefield or in negotiations like US Secretary of State Antony Blinken wants, pundits told Sputnik.

"Blinken was playing to the great ambition of Macron to be a major player in European defense," Gilbert Doctorow, a Brussels-based analyst in international relations and Russian affairs, told Sputnik. "But Macron's hold on power is tenuous and if his latest prime minister faces and loses a no-confidence vote, Macron will likely be ejected from the presidency under pressure from French bankers."

Jacques Sapir, director of studies at the School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences (EHESS) in Paris, echoed Doctorow's points, saying Blinken seems to overestimate Macron's political will.

"Blinken seems to ignore that [French] industry is no longer what it was in the early 2000s," Sapir told Sputnik.

France’s diminishing influence within the EU further complicates its ability to unite the bloc on Ukraine, according to French expert.

The lack of consensus among EU nations over the conflict leaves no room at the forefront for Paris, he added.

"In this context, we cannot expect France to take a leading role on the Ukrainian issue, except – perhaps – in the context of a peace initiative," Sapir highlighted.

Germany, not France, is and will likely remain the primary supplier of military aid to Ukraine after the US, noted Doctorow.

"Within NATO, France is a lightweight compared to Germany," he stressed.

There is little enthusiasm for the Ukraine proxy war in France, Doctorow said, casting doubt on Blinken's ability to rally French support for the cause.

Donald Trump’s election promises to end the Ukraine conflict “in 24 hours”were driven by “a combination of campaign bluster and a lack of appreciation of the intractability” of the situation, Reuters reported on Wednesday, citing sources close to the US president-elect.

Trump repeatedly touted his ability to end hostilities between Russia and Ukraine while on the campaign trail, accusing President Joe Biden of mishandling the crisis. Privately, members of the Trump team expect the timeline for resolving the conflict to be measured in months, the news agency said. Reuters spoke with two individuals on condition of anonymity, who described themselves as Trump associates who have discussed the issue with him.

The view aligns with public remarks by members of the future administration. Keith Kellogg, whom Trump has tapped to serve as a special envoy for Ukraine and Russia, told Fox News last week that he aims to mediate a resolution within 100 days after Inauguration Day on January 20.

Trump expressed frustration that he has to wait to be sworn in before implementing his plans, speaking at a recent press conference at his residence in Florida. Asked whether he intended to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in the first three to six months of his presidency, the politician said such a meeting would hopefully be arranged “long before six months”.

At the same event, Trump expressed empathy with Russian concerns over NATO’s expansion in Europe, which Moscow has cited as one of the key causes of the Ukraine conflict. He criticized the Biden administration for falling to effectively negotiate with Putin on the issue.

According to Reuters, Trump advisers generally support proposals that would take Ukraine’s bid to join NATO off the table for the foreseeable future, and push for a ceasefire along the current battle lines. They also advocate deploying European troops to monitor a potential demilitarized zone, the report said.

The Kremlin has welcomed Trump’s recognition of Russian national concerns. However, Moscow expects a sustainable solution addressing the wider European security architecture. Moscow will not accept an agreement that would merely freeze the conflict and give Kiev time to rebuild its army for future hostilities, as happened with the Minsk Agreements of 2014-2015, officials have said.
