The new service will offer guidance for those concerned about loved ones embracing conspiratorial beliefs, the Interior Ministry has said

Germans who suspect that their relatives or friends have fallen for conspiracy theories can now seek official guidance, the Interior Ministry has announced. The government has launched a nationwide consultation center to combat “lies and disinformation.”

Known as the Advice Compass on Conspiracy Thinking, it was launched on Thursday and is accessible online or by phone. According to the ministry, it aims to provide “the most tailored help and advice possible” for those seeking guidance.

The center offers consultations and can refer individuals to specialized agencies if necessary, according to Minister for Family Affairs Lisa Paus, without specifying which agencies will be involved.

Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said that an “open dialogue on equal terms” is often difficult with individuals deeply immersed in conspiracy beliefs. She hailed the initiative as “an important building block in the holistic fight against extremism and disinformation.”

Paus described conspiracy theories as “poison for our democracy” and a burden on families and colleagues. The Interior Ministry claimed that these beliefs can lead to extremist ideologies and incite violence, highlighting anti-Semitic conspiracies as a major concern.

The German authorities have been raising the alarm over the supposed rise of conspiracy theories. This trend is often linked to the Querdenker (lateral thinking) movement, which emerged during the Covid-19 pandemic to oppose the lockdown measures and other government policies. Since then, Querdenker groups have organized protests against Germany’s foreign policy and weapons supplies to Kiev, which began in 2022 following the escalation of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia.

Some factions have also called for “regionality, direct democracy, and limiting the power” of the federal government. Officials and media outlets often associate Querdenker groups with conspiracy theories and far-right organizations. In 2021, the German domestic security agency (BfV) announced it would closely monitor some of the Querdenker groups, claiming that they could try to “delegitimize” the state and use legitimate protest to “provoke escalation.”

The announcement of the Advice Compass came just days after the right-wing Alternative for Germany party (AfD) secured second place in snap parliamentary elections, receiving 20.8% of the vote – a significant rise from the 10.4% they received in 2021. Despite the gains, the party remains ostracized by the other major political parties and is frequently labeled ‘far-right’ by officials and media.

prison for 2 researchers.....

"Terrorist" attack or simple happening? On Thursday, February 27, the French justice system handed down an eight-month prison sentence to the two CNRS researchers who threw explosive devices at the Russian consulate in Marseille. The two physicists had used bottles of liquid nitrogen to make "noise" without causing damage, with the stated aim of denouncing the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The hearing - hilarious at times - ended with the incarceration of the two physicists, the Marseille judicial court having handed down two eight-month sentences with a committal warrant. However, they should be released soon, as the court has requested that these sentences be modified with electronic bracelets.

Around 7:30 a.m. on Monday, the two men had thrown three bottles whose contents, then unknown, had caused detonations, without causing any damage. Two had fallen on the roof of a consulate car park, the last had landed in the garden of the neighbour next door.

With the help of CCTV footage, the two men had been quickly identified and finally arrested that same evening during a rally in support of Ukraine, in front of the town hall.

At the hearing, the Russian consul, Stanislav Oranskiy, reiterated: for his country, "the acts committed are serious and show all the signs of a terrorist act". But, for the French prosecutor, "the terrorist aspect is a bit like the bottle: it goes pschitt".

Taking up the explanations of the two researchers, the magistrate insisted on the fact that the bottles contained only liquid nitrogen, which is "not dangerous". And it is true that in France, "the slightest demonstration by farmers is a little more muscular than what you have done", acknowledged the public prosecutor.

But despite everything, touching a diplomatic compound is "taboo, it's not done", said the prosecutor, who had requested a one-year prison sentence to be served under an electronic tag. "Embassies and consulates are sacred territories that must not be touched", also lectured them by the presiding judge, Thierry Bonifay.

The two defendants, with rather unusual profiles in these immediate appearance hearings, were judged free, seated next to the civil parties, the Russian consul and a representative of their employer.

Scientific demonstration

The CNRS, which had described these acts as an "attack", in fact accuses them of having "diverted" a scientific product.

The two physicists openly admitted to having stolen liquid nitrogen at -190°C from their laboratory, then transported it in two thermoses in order to pour it into the three small plastic bottles that will be thrown at the consulate.

A device that makes noise but is not dangerous, they assure. During their police custody, they also demonstrated it to the police, on the Luminy campus, the president stressed.

"My wife told me that it was a very bad idea", but "I persisted because I thought long and hard about the procedure so that it would be safe", justified Georges Sitja, 59 years old.

This discreet man, with white hair and small rectangular glasses, who presents himself as an "idealist", explained that he wanted to "draw attention to the state of the world", without thinking "about what comes next". He feels directly concerned with his wife of Ukrainian origin and his Ukrainian father-in-law who has been sleeping on their sofa since the start of the war.

For his part, Vasile Heresanu, 48, a Frenchman of Romanian origin, lists as causes the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the climate, the elections in the United States: "It's going in a direction that is not good." Dressed in hiking gear, with mid-length curly hair, he assures that he just wanted to "make noise" and now feels "overwhelmed". He says he regrets his actions.

For their lawyer, Rami Chahine, these are not delinquents, but "very, very anxious people" who, like many at the moment, "see things that worry them all over the world".

But for the court, it's a bit like when you hold someone up with a fake gun: "You know it can't hurt, but on the other side, they don't know!"

GUSNOTE: I HAVE PLACED THIS ITEM IN "CONSPIRACY THEORY" BECAUSE ANY DECENT HISTORIANS such as john mearsheimer WOULD KNOW THAT RUSSIA DID NOT INVADE UKRAINE OUT OF THE BLUE, BUT WAS PROVOKED INTO IT, AS THE KIEV REGIME WAS BOMBING THE DONBASS REGIONS.

AS WELL, PRESIDENT PUTIN HAD WARNED THE WEST MANY TIMES THAT UKRAINE IN NATO WAS NOT ON.

WE NEED TO RECALL BORIS JOHNSON WHO HAS PROMOTED THIS "WAR" AS A PROXY WAR DESIGNED TO DESTROY RUSSIA — SOMETHING THE AMERICANS HAVE BEEN "WORKING ON" SINCE 1917...
