the anthropocene.....

As yet another dangerous heatwave pushes temperatures well into the triple digits across much of Europe, climate defenders on Monday renewed calls for stronger action to combat the planetary emergency—including by ensuring that the impending European Climate Law ends fossil fuel use and eschews false solutions including international carbon offsetting.

Croatia, France, Italy, Portugal, and Spain are among the countries where near- or record-high temperatures have been recorded. Portugal and Spain both recorded their hottest-ever June days over the weekend. El Granado in southwestern Spain saw the mercury soar to nearly 115°C (46°C) on Saturday. The heatwave is expected to continue into the middle of the week, with authorities warning of elevated wildfire risk and potential severe health impacts.

Human-caused climate change has increased the frequency and intensity of heat waves since the 1950s. Every fraction of a degree of warming matters, and will lead to them becoming even stronger and occurring more frequently.

Coal, oil and gas are by far the largest contributors to climate change. When these fossil fuels are burned to power combustion engines, generate electricity, make plastics and heat homes, they release greenhouse gas emissions. These act like a blanket, covering Earth's atmosphere, trapping the sun's heat and contributing to increasing heat waves.

Extreme heat can also lead to a greater risk of other types of disasters, such as drought and wildfires.

How can we live with rising heat?

Healthcare experts advise people to stay out of the heat whenever possible, to avoid strenuous activity and to drink plenty of fluids — but not alcohol or caffeine.

Homes can be protected to some degree by drawing blinds or curtains and keeping windows closed during the day and opening them at night when the air is cooler. Dressing in light-colored clothing that reflects heat and sunlight can help, as can electric fans, if the ambient temperature is below 35 degrees Celsius.

Long-term strategies to make the heat more bearable include climate-proofing cities by greening spaces and planting trees along streets. This not only provides shade but reduces the heat trapped in concrete.

Overall, experts say boosting the green energy transition by using renewable souces of energy that do not release heat-trapping emissions is key to keeping global temperatures down.

In 2024, 40% of the world's electricity was generated using renewable energy. Solar was the main driver of this trend, according to a report by global energy think tank Ember.

Before the war began, summer in Gaza was a season of joy. Families thrived on creating small moments of happiness, even amid daily electricity cuts and the suffocating siege. Many loved to flock to the beach or spend time at the water chalets, hoping to find some refreshing relief from the scorching sun.

They would sit beneath wide umbrellas, spread blankets across the golden beach sand, and share ice cream along with slices of mango and watermelon, all while watching their children swim and splash in the sea. These simple gatherings brought beauty to the season and made it something to look forward to each year.

However, the latest Israeli war on Gaza has turned even these modest pleasures into distant memories. It has erased any sense of joy from summer, transforming it into another season of suffering — marked by starvation, displacement, thirst, and daily killings.

Thousands of Gazans are now living in tents after losing their homes or being forcibly displaced following the expansion of Israeli military operations on April 3, 2025. Many describe summer in these tents as “hell,” as they lack even the simplest means to cope with the intense heat amid a complete electricity blackout.

Most of the tents are made of nylon, offering no protection from the blazing sun. Instead, they trap heat and turn into unbearable ovens. Areej Alkataib, 40, shared that the intense heat has turned her tent into a suffocating grave. “I try to spray water over the nylon from time to time to reduce the heat, but all my efforts are in vain. I always seek refuge outside despite the harsh conditions, as I cannot endure the heat inside,” she told me.

forever....

Every person in the Netherlands has so-called “forever chemicals” in their blood, often at levels above health safety limits, according to the findings of the first nationwide study on the issue in an EU country, published on Thursday.

PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, are a group of human-made chemicals used in products like plastic food wrappers, non-stick cookware, stain-resistant fabrics, cleaning agents, and personal care items. Due to their durability, they break down extremely slowly and can persist in the environment and living organisms for years, hence the nickname “forever chemicals.”

The survey published on Thursday by the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM), found that “Everyone in the Netherlands has different types of PFAS in the blood. In almost everyone, the amount of PFAS is higher than the health limit value.”

Human exposure typically occurs through contaminated food, drinking water, household products, air, and soil. Studies have linked certain PFAS compounds to health issues such as high cholesterol, infertility, kidney problems, and some cancers.

Though their presence does not guarantee illness, the chemicals may impair the immune system, with the severity of effects depending on the level and duration of exposure, as well as individual health conditions, the institute noted.

The study analyzed around 1,500 blood samples collected between 2016 and 2017, and RIVM confirmed it is currently examining samples from 2025 to assess recent exposure trends.

While PFAS are known for persisting in the body, they can gradually disappear over time, the institute noted, stressing the need to reduce daily intake.

Similar studies have been conducted in the US, Canada, and Australia, revealing widespread exposure across various populations.

bombs and fires....

As an Iranian American Christian from Los Angeles, I watch with alarm as a fringe religious prophecy creeps into the highest levels of American policy. What may sound like a spiritual metaphor—biblical End Times, Armageddon, divine vengeance—is now inspiring large-scale political decisions, putting lives at risk from LA to Gaza to Tehran.

After Hamas killed over a thousand Israelis and took hundreds captive on October 7, 2023, Israel has dropped the equivalent of several nuclear bombs on the Gaza Strip’s mass incarcerated Palestinian refugee enclave—with the U.S. supplying about 68% of Israel’s foreign-origin weaponry in this warAmnesty International describes Israel’s response to October 7 as a genocide—killings “with the specific intent of destroying Palestinians in Gaza.”

In April 2024 in LA, masked vigilantes attacked UCLA’s nonviolent pro-Palestinian encampment for three hours with wood, metal, and fireworks before LAPD intervened. At the beginning of this year, Angelenos were devastated by the Eaton and Palisades Fires—worsened by global warming—taking dozens of lives, destroying thousands of homes, and creating eerie orange skies above Los Angeles.

The thought of my U.S. taxpayer dollars funding bombing campaigns of my ancestral homeland that could eventually become nuclear, threatening the beautiful ancient city of Isfahan that I visited in my childhood, is unbearable.

Now, the world is in the throes of President Donald Trump’s chaotic second term. Shortly after his inauguration, he once again withdrew the United States from the Paris climate accords—while LA was ablaze. More recently, as Angelenos have protested the federal government’s inhumane mass deportation campaign, which has lately targeted Iranian nationals, the Trump administration majorly escalated by sending in thousands of National Guard troops to Los Angeles.

On June 13, while the U.S. and Iran were in the middle of diplomatic negotiations around reinstating Obama-era restraints on Iran’s nuclear energy program, Israel under Prime Minister BenjaminNetanyahu, still waging a genocide on Gaza and facing an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court as of November 2024, began a large-scale attack on Iran. This represented the most significant attack on Iran since the Iran-Iraq War of 1980-1988—culminating in the killings of at least 600 Iranians, including many civilians and children. In response, Iran attacked Israel with retaliatory strikes that killed dozens of Israelis.

In a televised address on Sunday, June 22, President Trump reported that the United States military under his command bombed three sites in Iran housing the country’s nuclear energy program, including Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan, entering the U.S. into Israel’s offensive attack. He even at one point raised the possibility of a U.S. nuclear strike on Iran in the future. On Monday, June 23, Iran retaliated against the U.S. by launching limited missile strikes directed at an American military base in Qatar, with no casualties. Later that day on social media, Trump announced a cease-fire deal between Israel and Iran. Though both nations continued to exchange fire shortly after the cease-fire went into effect, Israel and Iran are now experiencing a fragile peace. Trump and Netanyahu have purportedly agreed to end the war in Gaza within two weeks of the U.S. strikes on Iran, and the U.S. and Iran are expected to talk during the week of June 30.

This conflict has deeply impacted Angelenos, including my own family. LA is home to the largest Iranian diaspora globally, known as “Tehrangeles.” As an Iranian American, I don’t see Iran as a geopolitical adversary; it’s home to my loved ones and heritage. Israel concentrated many of its airstrikes in Tehran—the most populous city in Western Asia—including airstrikes in my own cousin’s neighborhood. The escalation of this conflict, including Trump’s call on Iranians in Tehran to “evacuate immediately,” forced my cousin and disabled U.S. citizen grandmother to flee Tehran to Northern Iran. It was a strange feeling when I last spoke to my grandmother before her internet went out, hearing her say in Farsi, “Ma ra zadan”—“They hit us.” The thought of my U.S. taxpayer dollars funding bombing campaigns of my ancestral homeland that could eventually become nuclear, threatening the beautiful ancient city of Isfahan that I visited in my childhood, is unbearable. After all, Iran is filled with rich world history—including the most widely accepted site of the tomb of Prophet Daniel of the Bible, who I am named after.

How did we get to this escalating polycrisis of destruction? In part, because white Christian nationalist leaders have embraced a belief in the End Times—an extremist theology that now holds wide political sway according to religion scholar Bradley Onishi. Texas megachurch pastor, founder of influential political lobbying organization Christians United for Israel, and Trump adviser John Hagee preaches that warfare between Israel, Palestine, and Iran is part of a biblically predicted Battle of Armageddon, in which the U.S. must militarily support Israel to be reunited with God in the Rapture. He cites Ezekiel 38 and 39, an Old Testament prophecy that says a restored Israel in the End Times will be attacked by a nation called Gog, supported by Persia (modern-day Iran). In retaliation, a vengeful God of Israel would decimate Gog and Persia through brute force “to cleanse the land.” In Hagee’s words, Iran is “already in the hit list in Ezekiel 38.” This prophecy also talks of climate destruction during this violent vision of the End Times, including “torrents of rain, hailstones, and burning sulfur.” These ideas are no longer confined to pulpits—they are shaping real-world policy. Even former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo claimed that God sent Trump to save Israel from Iran.

If we must turn to apocalyptic scripture to understand the future, then why don’t we skip ahead to Revelation 21: the creation of a “new heaven and a new Earth,” including a “new Jerusalem,” where “there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” Los Angeles and our world are enduring too much grief to bear. Instead of pushing us close to the brink of Armageddon through military escalations at home and abroad animated by religious fundamentalism, U.S. policymakers must find the courage to lead us toward world peace through diplomacy and climate repair. That means reinstating the Obama-era nuclear deal with Iran of zero weaponization, as opposed to an unrealistic goal of zero enrichment. It means pushing for an immediate, permanent cease-fire between the U.S., Israel, Palestine, and Iran, and it means reentering the U.S. into the Paris climate accords.

My faith teaches redemption, not vengeance. As God promises in the Bible, “if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”

FORGET GLOBAL WARMING AND ELECTRIC CARS... OIL IS STILL THE KING OF THE ANTHROPOCENE....

Libya has launched its first energy exploration tender since the NATO-backed 2011 uprising that ousted and killed long-time leader Muammar Gaddafi. Thirty-seven international oil giants are taking part, an official of the North African country’s National Oil Corporation (NOC) told Bloomberg in an interview published on Wednesday.

Libya wants to revive its oil sector, which has faced repeated disruptions for over a decade due to militia violence and political rivalries. The African country remains deeply fractured, divided between the UN-recognized Government of National Unity based in the capital, Tripoli, and the rival Government of National Stability in the eastern city of Benghazi, following Gaddafi’s demise.

Massoud Seliman, chairman of the state-run oil firm (NOC) said almost all “well-known international companies,” including US multinationals ExxonMobil and Chevron, French energy giant TotalEnergies, and Italy’s Eni are among the firms competing in the licensing round.

He said they are vying for 22 offshore and onshore blocks across the country, adding that contracts with successful bidders are expected to be signed by the end of 2025.

The country holds Africa’s largest proven oil reserves, with an estimated 48 billion barrels – representing 41% of the continent’s total as of 2024 – according to the US Energy Information Administration (EIA). However, it reportedly last held a bidding round in 2007, four years before the NATO-backed uprising. Authorities aim to raise daily oil output to two million barrels before 2030, up from the current level of around 1.4 million barrels a day, and surpassing the 1.75 million-barrel peak recorded under Gaddafi in 2006, Bloomberg data suggests.
