a sociopathic state .....

a sociopathic state .....

The unconscionable attacks of Israel upon Gaza can be seen as the action of a sociopathic state upon a helpless victim.

While the diagnosis of sociopathy is commonly reserved for the individual, it may be used to describe an entire society in a way that illuminates the behavior of that society towards another group of people. Sociopathy is a social concept by definition, and for this reason can be expanded to describe the nature of an entire society.

The ruling quality of the sociopath is a complete lack of empathy towards the Other. The sociopath is incapable of feeling for other people. The Israelis have kept the Gaza strip blockaded, hermetically sealed for a year and a half, causing untold suffering for the people of Gaza. The lack of empathy for so many helpless human beings is sociopathic. Israel has long held its status as a sociopathic state.

At the core of the sociopath’s personality is a deep-seated rage which is repressed and cut off from the conscious mind but which directs the sociopath’s actions. It is this rage which makes the sociopath incapable of feeling empathy for the Other, and which fuels the mercilessness with which he treats others.

This rage is the only valid emotion a sociopath has. It accounts for his short temper, his consistent overreaction to the smallest setbacks, and the ruthlessness with which he treats others when they do not bend to his will.

and so …..

Israel’s ground offensive in Gaza was a "monstrosity" and a marked failure for the United Nations, the president of the UN General Assembly said.

In an extraordinary outburst, Miguel D'escoto Brockmann, of Nicaragua, blasted the Israeli action as the Security Council convened its third emergency session on the crisis in Gaza.

"I think it's a monstrosity; there's no other way to name it," Mr Brockmann said yesterday.

"Once again, the world is watching in dismay the dysfunctionality of the Security Council."

His remarks were seen as a slight at the role of the UN, which again prevented the council from issuing an agreed statement on the crisis.

UN chief Ban Ki-moon was left lamenting the Israeli incursion after a week-long bombardment of Gaza that claimed about 460 lives and resulted in injuries to thousands more.

Israel has said it is targeting Hamas militants and resources but according to early estimates, about a quarter of those killed were civilians.

A spokesman for Mr Ban said the UN Secretary General had expressed his extreme disappointment to Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and that he had called for an immediate end to the ground operation.

The Security Council, however, failed to reach agreement on Israel's action, with the US again blocking consensus during the late-night emergency meeting.

A spokesman for the US, Alejandro Wolff, said Hamas must stop smuggling arms into Gaza and cease rocket attacks on Israel, which were the "root cause" of violence in the region.

He said there was no point in the Security Council issuing a statement which Hamas would not honour.

pushing back .....

More than 100 Australian Jews, including two award-winning novelists and a former federal cabinet minister, have signed a statement condemning Israel's siege of Gaza, heightening tensions within the local Jewish community over the violence.

The Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, meanwhile called yesterday for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza but refused to criticise the Israeli offensive.

Authors Linda Jaivin and Sara Dowse, the environment minister in the Whitlam government, Moss Cass, and the NSW Greens leader, Ian Cohen, are among 120 Australian Jews to accuse the Israeli Government of a "grossly disproportionate military assault on Gaza because it was Israel that violated the fragile truce on November 4, 2008".

Their statement has provoked a backlash from leaders of Australia's main Jewish groups, who argue that Israel is acting in self-defence.

The statement was co-ordinated, but not endorsed, by the group Independent Australian Jewish Voices. It is part of an international outcry from dissident Jewish groups, including J Street in the US and Gush Shalom in Israel.
