hot air rises...

hot air

Sunday week will be anything but a day of rest for Malcolm Turnbull and the Coalition, with the Opposition Leader convening a party-room meeting to thrash out amendments on the emissions trading scheme.

The shadow cabinet will also meet in Melbourne today to discuss the outline of those amendments, as Mr Turnbull admits internal party dissent over its ETS policy is damaging him and the Liberals.

"It doesn't reflect well on anyone," Mr Turnbull said. "Discipline is important and it's vital that we work as a team."

He told the ABC's 7.30 Report that convincing the Nationals may be a lost cause.

barnaby rejects emissions trading scheme...

Fearing the day a beef roast costs $150 a pop, Nationals Senate leader Barnaby Joyce has categorically ruled out ever supporting the government's emissions trading scheme (ETS).

In its current form, the ETS would strip Australians of jobs, decimate regional economies while also having zero effect on reducing climate change, he said.

Senator Joyce rejected outright previous comments from his party leader Warren Truss that the scheme would be considered given substantial changes.

"I firmly believe that the changes that would be required would be so immense that it would no longer be an emissions trading scheme," he told ABC Radio on Thursday.

party room with kiddie chairs...

Opposition Leader Malcolm Turnbull says he accepts that some Opposition MPs may cross the floor to vote against the emissions trading scheme regardless of the final Coalition position.

Last night Mr Turnbull won the Coalition party room's backing to push for changes to the scheme.

The Coalition amendments will seek to make the scheme more industry-friendly and give more assistance to heavy polluters.

But Mr Turnbull will still have to seek party room approval for a final Coalition position depending on the outcomes of negotiations with the Government.
