annus horribilis .....from Crikey …. In the course of 2014, around 70 women and children will have died at the hands of a partner, ex-partner or father. We don’t know exactly how many, because governments across Australia don’t keep uniform sets of data, but we know roughly how many based on historical data.
"NoForn" .....Drone strikes and other "targeted killings" of terrorist and insurgent leaders favoured by the US and supported by Australia can strengthen extremist groups and be counterproductive, according to a secret CIA report published by WikiLeaks. According to a leaked document by the CIA's Directorate of Intelligence, "high value targeting" (HVT) involving air strikes and special forces operations against insurgent leaders can be effective, but can also have negative effects including increasing violence and greater popular support for extremist groups.
smoking-joe discovers economics...Yes the Government has done well not to chase falling revenue by cutting expenditure after the mini budget, but it has done little to bolster economic growth other than saying it will be bolstered, writes Greg Jericho.
next in line...In Bush family lore, Jeb was always supposed to be the smarter, more level-headed one.

Lindt Cafe hostage drama in Martin Place, Sydney: day two
Here We Go AgainSaw a social media post which posed something along the lines that those who are uninformed shouldn't be discussing what's happened today as such discussions were promoting the spread of racism. It's a well-meant train of thought, but I have a couple of disagreements in that (a) The racism was always there- such events make it feel socially permissable for those folks to spout it, and I for one am happy to see them "out themselves"
shocking news...

on a hiding to nothing .....Tony Abbott is at his best when he has something to fight. Ask Kevin Rudd. Or Julia Gillard. Or Malcolm Turnbull. Abbott vanquished them all with brutal efficiency, mainly because he had a devastatingly clear line of attack. "Great big toxic tax based on a lie," or something. Sure, that's more a mash-up than a quote, but with these eight words, Abbott destroyed three leaders. Even in power his best moments have come as he has seized upon an enemy, whether a Russian "bully" or an Islamist "death cult".
turnbull goes bananas with his internet filter...Question: When is an internet filter not an internet filter? Answer: When Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull says so. On Wednesday, the minister announced the government's response to an "online copyright infringement" discussion paper that he and Attorney-General George Brandis put out in late July.
abbottgang island...You have to hand it to some of the lunatics at Murdoch's News Limited. It looks that some of the inmates are just there for the employ... take this cartoon above for example, it defines the Liberal (CONservative) Party with some accuracy... The heading though is misleading. They were not "cruising" in opposition... They were just trying to drop bombs on the legitimate government of the day, mostly going in circles, with the help of this Murdoch News Limited outfit... They eventually got to the island but their boat exploded because their engine was only burning negativity... The golden boy was proven to be an awkwardly-walking pimply bully who lied more and more to cover his lies... We knew that.
