The LEGAL system in this country does allow people almost ENDLESS appeals and procedures, and it's really the accumulation of those that often IS the CAUSE of people being kept in detention for a VERY LONG period of time.

Gus, I think it's the Legal Process that allows endless appeals and procedures.

If the Law was used then the vast majority of these people would have been given asylum in the first instance.

Asylum seekers are not being treated humanely.

I believe that it isn't the fault of the law, but the fault of the people administering the law.

This is why I did the cartoon showing the ludicrous premise used by John Howard to explain the length of detention, without cracking up. (the quote is from the prime minister himself ABC Lateline 31 May 2005) This prime minister will stop at nothing to deflect the blame from his outrageous policies... and if someone in his party opposes him he will read the riot act and make sure they cave in... John Howard has turned the country into a far right wing Nazi ideology and the Labor party is not far behind under advisers who are always in damage control instead of selling proper polices that could appear risky at first but definitely far more honorable...
