"aussie tony" & the value of finger-pointing .....
from The Guardian Blair blames Iran for Middle East conflicts Wednesday December 20, 2006 ‘Tony Blair today labelled Iran as the main obstacle to hopes for peace in the Middle East. Speaking in Dubai at the end of his five-day tour of the region, the prime minister called on moderate Muslim states to unite in combating Islamic extremists, such as the hardline regime of the Iranian President, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Mr Blair said that Iran wanted "to pin us back in Lebanon, in Iraq and in Palestine", and went on to criticise the "indifference" of many world leaders towards its nuclear ambitions.’

‘Tony Blair inadvertently made diplomatic history yesterday by uniting Iran and Iraq on one point: criticism of his approach to the Middle East.
The Prime Minister was accused by Tareq al-Hashemi, Iraq's vice-president, of being "brainwashed" on changing his mind to withdraw troops from Iraq by George Bush, the US president.
Mr Hashemi said Mr Blair was in favour of announcing a timetable to pull troops out of Iraq, but changed his mind after speaking to Mr Bush.
In a separate move yesterday, Mr Blair called for an "alliance of moderation" across the region to counter the influence of Iran.
But his speech was denounced as "hostile" by Tehran, which accused him of fuelling tensions in the Middle East.’

After a meeting in Iraq with US generals, Defense Secretary Robert Gates acknowledged that commanders "out here have expressed a concern about" President Bush's plan to increase US troop levels in Iraq.
meanwhile, our little warmongers bushit & “aussie tony” remain hell bent on their insane pursuit of western hegemony in the middle east …..
‘The United States and Britain will begin moving additional warships and strike aircraft into the Persian Gulf region in a display of military resolve toward Iran that will come as the United Nations continues to debate possible sanctions against the country, Pentagon and military officials said Wednesday.
The officials said that Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates was expected this week to approve a request by commanders for a second aircraft carrier and its supporting ships to be stationed within quick sailing distance of Iran by early next year.
Senior American officers said the increase in naval power should not be viewed as preparations for any offensive strike against Iran. But they acknowledged that the ability to hit Iran would be increased and that Iranian leaders might well call the growing presence provocative. One purpose of the deployment, they said, is to make clear that the focus on ground troops in Iraq has not made it impossible for the United States and its allies to maintain a military watch on Iran. That would also reassure Washington's allies in the region who are concerned about Iran's intentions.
The officials said the planned growth in naval power in the gulf and surrounding waters would be useful in enforcing any sanctions that the United Nations might impose as part of Washington's strategy to punish Iran for what it sees as ambitions to acquire nuclear weapons. And the buildup would address another concern: that Iran could try to block oil shipments from the gulf in retaliation for United Nations sanctions or other American-led pressure.’

‘In violation of the US Code and international law, the Bush administration is spending more money (in inflation-adjusted dollars) to develop illegal, offensive germ warfare than the $2 billion spent in World War II on the Manhattan Project to make the atomic bomb.
So says Francis Boyle, the professor of international law who drafted the Biological Weapons Anti-Terrorism Act of 1989 enacted by Congress. He states the Pentagon "is now gearing up to fight and 'win' biological warfare" pursuant to two Bush national strategy directives adopted "without public knowledge and review" in 2002.
The Pentagon's Chemical and Biological Defense Program was revised in 2003 to implement those directives, endorsing "first-use" strike of chemical and biological weapons (CBW) in war, says Boyle, who teaches at the University of Illinois, Champaign.
Terming the action "the proverbial smoking gun," Boyle said the mission of the controversial CBW program "has been altered to permit development of offensive capability in chemical and biological weapons!" [Original italics.]
The same directives, Boyle charges in his book Biowarfare and Terrorism (Clarity Press), "unconstitutionally usurp and nullify the right and the power of the United States Congress to declare war, in gross and blatant violation of Article 1, Section 8, Clause 11 of the United States Constitution."’

The minutes of cabinet meetings at which ministers discussed the legality of invading Iraq should be published, the information commissioner, Richard Thomas, said today.
In an unprecedented ruling, Thomas said the papers about the controversial legal advice should be made public in part because "there is a widespread view that the justification for the decision on military action in Iraq is either not fully understood or that the public were given the full or genuine reasons for that decision".
Thomas said the public interest in disclosure outweighed the principles that normally allow the government not to have to publish minutes of cabinet decisions.
The government is expected to appeal against Thomas's decision, which on its own will not guarantee that the minutes will be disclosed.
The legality of the invasion of Iraq has been a source of huge controversy ever since the invasion in March 2003, with some lawyers and campaigners believing that Tony Blair's decision to attack was illegal under international law.
At the time the government published a nine-paragraph legal opinion written by the then-attorney general, Lord Goldsmith, claiming that the invasion was legal.
But it subsequently emerged that, in a much longer legal opinion written 10 days earlier, Goldsmith expressed reservations about the legality of the attack.
