the bullshitman secretly flew to hawaii...

The Prime Minister has been forced to backtrack after telling Parliament that Labor leader Anthony Albanese was "fully aware" he was headed to Hawaii during the catastrophic bushfires in late 2019.

Key points:
  • Scott Morrison claimed he texted Anthony Albanese when and where he was going on leave in December 2019
  • Mr Morrison soon had to walk back that claim after being challenged, saying Mr Albanese only knew when he was going
  • Labor has been seeking to highlight claims the PM has a reputation for lying

Prime Minister Scott Morrison cut short a family holiday to Hawaii after significant criticism over being absent during the bushfire crisis.

During Question Time, Labor challenged Scott Morrison on whether he attempted to cover up his overseas trip during the Black Summer bushfires which engulfed south-eastern Australia two years ago.

Mr Morrison initially claimed he told Mr Albanese he was going to Hawaii, but within hours he twice attempted to correct the record, finally admitting he had not disclosed his holiday destination.

The issue erupted when Labor MP Fiona Phillips questioned the Prime Minister about the Hawaiian holiday.

"When my electorate was burning, the Prime Minister's office told journalists he was not on holiday in Hawaii, why did the Prime Minister's office say that when it wasn't true?" she said.

Mr Morrison responded by saying he had texted Mr Albanese while en route to Hawaii, informing him about where he was going.

"I texted him from the plane when I was going on that leave and told him where I was going and he was fully aware of where I was travelling with my family," Mr Morrison said.

PM forced to clarify: 'Where I was going was on leave'

Moments after Question Time concluded, Mr Albanese denied the claim, saying it "is not true".

"On the 15th of December, 2019, at 9:44pm, the Prime Minister did text me saying he was going on leave. He did not tell me where he was going. He said he was going with his family. I kept that text message confidential, as you do with private text messages between private phones," he said.

"On the Friday, he disclosed in an interview with 2GB that he had texted me and that was the first time that that became public.

"But at no stage did he tell me where he was going."

Mr Morrison then walked back his earlier language while hitting out at Mr Albanese.

"Where I was going was on leave," he said.

"He knew I was taking leave, Mr Speaker, I told him I was taking leave, and Mr Speaker, he chose to politicise that and has done so ever since."

After a brief period of bipartisanship to acknowledge outgoing speaker Tony Smith, Mr Morrison returned to the dispatch box to offer a further explanation.

"When I was referring to 'he knew where I was going and was fully aware I was travelling with my family', what I meant was that we were going on leave together," he said.

"I know I did not tell him where we were going because that is a private matter where members take leave and I know I did not tell him the destination, nor would I, nor would he expect me to have told him."

"I simply told him that I was taking leave with my family, and he was aware of that at that time."

With a pseudo-election campaign afoot, Labor has been sharpening its attacks on Mr Morrison's character, attempting to cast him as the "liar from the Shire".

In recent weeks Mr Morrison has been accused of lying to French President Emmanuel Macron and to former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull.

Mr Albanese told Sky News Mr Morrison's accusation was extraordinary.

"The problem for this Prime Minister is he has a character trait whereby he says whatever is convenient at the time regardless of what the facts are," Mr Albanese said.

captain cook died there...

Scott Morrison’s infamous trip to Hawaii during the Black Summer bushfires is again raising eyebrows in Canberra, with Labor claiming to have caught the Prime Minister in a lie over texts to Anthony Albanese as he escaped Australia at the height of the crisis.

The Opposition Leader claimed an answer that Mr Morrison gave in Parliament on Monday in defence of his controversial holiday was “nonsense”, as Labor again peppered the PM with questions about his track record on honesty.

“The Prime Minister did text me, saying he was going on leave. He didn’t tell me where he was going,” Mr Albanese said.

It followed a series of questions in Monday’s question time, as Labor asked about Mr Morrison’s previous comments on electric vehicles and the vaccine rollout. But it was an unexpected callback to the PM’s family holiday to Hawaii in 2019 – which his office initially kept under wraps, and was first uncovered by The New Daily – that set off claims of mistruths from Labor.
