scotland the brave nationalists…...MOSCOW (Sputnik) - British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss does not intend to authorize a second referendum on Scottish independence if she is elected UK prime minister, she told The Telegraph. "Scottish Nationalists accepted that their referendum was a once in a generation opportunity, and I will hold them to that," Truss said on Saturday, adding "I will work to strengthen our whole Union."
"As prime minister, I will do what is necessary and right to defend our Union, just as I have already done on the Northern Ireland Protocol," she continued.
At the end of June, Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon proposed that a new vote on Scotland's independence should be held on October 19, 2023. Outgoing British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has repeatedly stated he would not allow a second referendum since the Scottish people already decided to stay within the United Kingdom in a 55%-to-45% vote in 2014.
"The SNP [Scottish National Party] lost the 2014 referendum and Nicola Sturgeon is now leading a campaign of deception to steamroller the UK and break up the Union. But I am completely clear that there will be no second Scottish independence referendum on my watch," Truss told The Telegraph on Saturday.
Sturgeon has told the Scottish Parliament that the government hopes that the referendum bill, passed on by the Lord Advocate to the UK Supreme Court, will be deemed to be within the legislative competence of the Scottish Parliament, as the vote is consultative and not self-executing. "The Scottish Independence Referendum Bill isn’t legal and will be invalidated if passed by the Scottish Parliament. When Westminster devolved power to Scotland, it did not include the ability to hold valid referenda to break up the Union," Truss emphasized.
"Any Scotland independence referendum would need to be authorised by the Westminster parliament. If I become prime minister, I would not grant that authority."
Rishi Sunak, former Chancellor of the Exchequer and one of the candidates for the post of UK Conservative Party leader and British prime minister, said on Tuesday that a second Scottish independence referendum is "the wrong priority at the worst possible moment" as the country should pull together instead of tearing itself apart.

Last week, British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss took aim at Nicola Sturgeon over the SNP leader’s fresh demands to hold a new Scottish independence referendum, calling Scotland’s first minister an “attention seeker.”
Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has argued that UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss had asked for her advice on being featured in Vogue magazine when they briefly rubbed elbows at the UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow (COP26) in 2021.
Speaking to LBC Radio on Wednesday, Sturgeon referred to her meeting with the Conservative leadership frontrunner on the sidelines of COP26 last fall, which came shortly after her second interview with the magazine was released.
“[…] I’d just been interviewed by Vogue, […] that was the main thing she [Truss] wanted to talk to me about, she wanted to know how she could get into Vogue – and she calls me an attention-seeker,” the Scottish first minister claimed, referring to her recent showdown with the foreign secretary.
According to Sturgeon, “I said to her they came and asked me. I didn’t really mean to do this, but I said to her it hadn’t actually been my first time in Vogue, it had been my second time. It looked a little bit as if she’d swallowed a wasp. I’m sure she’ll be in Vogue before too long.”
The remarks came after Truss slammed Sturgeon during a Tory leadership race event last week, also making it clear that she rules out a second Scottish independence referendum.
“I feel like I’m a child of the union, I really believe we’re a family and we’re better together and I think the best thing to do with Nicola Sturgeon is ignore her,” the foreign secretary said, adding, “she’s an attention seeker, that’s what she is.”
In late June, Sturgeon proposed that a new vote on Scotland's independence be held on October 19, 2023.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson responded in a letter to the Scottish first minister that now was not the time to deal with the issue because of problems at home and around the world. The PM has repeatedly stated that he will not allow a second referendum, since the people of Scotland expressed their will in 2014, when 44.7% voted for independence and 55.3% said “no” to it.
