trump lives in lalalalaland.....German Chancellor Olaf Scholz criticized U.S. President Donald Trump's proposal to tie military aid for Ukraine to access to the country's rare earth resources, calling it "very selfish and self-centered," Spiegel reported on Feb. 4. Speaking after an informal meeting of European leaders in Brussels, Scholz reportedly stressed that Ukraine should first be helped to "get back on its feet" and that its resources should be used for reconstruction after the war. This comes as Trump told reporters on Feb. 3 that he was seeking a deal where Ukraine would "secure what we're giving them with their rare earths and other things," though he did not specify which materials Washington is targeting. A source in the Presidential Office told the Kyiv Independent that sharing Ukrainian resources with allies is already part of President Volodymyr Zelensky's "victory plan," which has been presented to foreign leaders, including Trump. Trump's remarks come amid uncertainty over the future of the U.S. aid to Ukraine. The U.S. has provided $65.9 billion in military aid to Ukraine since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion, with assistance remaining unaffected by the current aid freeze, Zelensky confirmed on Jan. 25. Non-military programs run by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) have lost funding under the new administration. USAID has provided Ukraine with $2.6 billion in humanitarian aid, $5 billion in development assistance, and over $30 billion in direct budgetary support. In response to the funding cuts, Ukraine's parliamentary committee on humanitarian and information policy has begun consultations with European partners to temporarily replace U.S. funding. Under Scholz's leadership, Germany has become Ukraine's second-largest military donor after the U.S. However, the chancellor has resisted providing Taurus long-range cruise missiles, citing escalation concerns. Scholz has also blocked the proposed additional security assistance for Ukraine worth 3 billion ($3.09 billion) euros unless it is covered by additional government borrowing. The plan, backed by German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock and Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, included three additional Iris-T air defense batteries, 10 howitzers, and more artillery ammunition.

Ukraine Russia Peace Talks Trump Wants Kyiv's MineralsThe presentation discusses the geopolitical and financial implications of the Ukraine-Russia war, particularly in relation to U.S. involvement and economic interests.
Key points include:
U.S. Financial Interests in Ukraine: Former President Trump has suggested that the U.S. should receive economic benefits from Ukraine, particularly through access to rare earth minerals, as a return on the massive financial and military aid provided. This represents a shift in the discussion, focusing on potential economic gains rather than purely strategic or humanitarian reasons.
Rare Earth Minerals & Resource Control: The discussion highlights that Ukraine has significant rare earth mineral reserves, but most of these are in Russian-controlled eastern Ukraine, making access difficult unless the U.S. negotiates directly with Russia. Meanwhile, the western part of Ukraine, which remains under Ukrainian control, is dominated by multinational agricultural corporations.
Corruption & Money Laundering Allegations: The discussion accuses Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky of corruption, claiming that large sums of U.S. aid have gone missing or been misused. It is also alleged that U.S. politicians have financially benefited from money funneled through Ukraine.
Ukraine’s Military Strategy & Future Prospects: Zelensky's proposal to restructure Ukraine’s military into a U.S.-style corps system is criticized as unrealistic due to manpower shortages and the prolonged time needed to implement such changes. The discussion suggests Ukraine’s military is struggling and lacks the resources for long-term success.
Western Policy & NATO's Stance: NATO leaders, including figures like Mark Rutte, continue to emphasize the Russian threat, suggesting that Russia’s influence and destabilization efforts are spreading further into Western Europe. However, the discussion criticizes Western leadership for prolonging the war instead of seeking peace.
Broader Implications for the U.S. & Allies: The conversation highlights that the U.S. has alternative sources of rare earth minerals but has neglected domestic production, relying instead on foreign nations, including China. The speaker argues that the U.S. should focus on developing its own resources rather than seeking them in Ukraine.
Overall, the discussion portrays the war as a mix of strategic failure, financial corruption, and geopolitical miscalculations, arguing that the U.S. should cut its losses and push for a negotiated peace rather than continuing to fund Ukraine’s military efforts.

Ukraine’s supporters must help push Russian forces out of the mineral-rich former territories of the country before investing in rare-earths, Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky has said.
US President Donald Trump stated on Monday that Ukraine must ensure a return on America’s $300 billion in aid through its rare-earth minerals. Speaking at the White House, he called for “equalization,” hinting at a deal involving these resources. It is not clear whether he was proposing a free supply or a discounted sale.
Rare-earth minerals – 17 elements valued for their magnetic and electrochemical properties – are used in smartphones, EV batteries, and cancer treatment.
Last week, Trump suspended all USAID programs, a US agency that funds global projects through humanitarian aid. The move halted numerous initiatives in Ukraine.
“We have enough rare-earth metals, but Russia has occupied our lands since 2014,” Zelensky said on Tuesday in Kiev, responding to Trump. “We are open to them being developed by our partners who help us defend the land, push back the enemy with their weapons, presence, and sanctions. And this is absolutely fair.”

A 2024 World Economic Forum report highlighted Ukraine’s potential as a key supplier of raw materials vital for defense, aerospace, and green energy. Ukraine’s total mineral wealth was estimated at over $14.8 trillion in 2023, according to Forbes.
Before the 2022 escalation of the Ukraine conflict, the country had Europe’s largest reserves of titanium and lithium, which are not rare-earths, but are critical for military industries, batteries, and capacitors. Around $7 trillion of Ukraine’s total mineral wealth is in its former Donbass regions of Donetsk and Lugansk, according to Forbes.
Most of these territories came under Russian control after Donetsk and Lugansk voted to join Russia in 2022. Both declared independence in 2014 from Ukraine after the Western-backed Maidan coup in Kiev.
Russian President Vladimir Putin cited the protection of people in Donbass as a key reason for launching the military operation in Ukraine. Resources in these territories are a major factor in the support of NATO member states for Kiev, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov claimed in October 2024. “Their discourse revolves around territory and resources that they require in America,” he said. “Our concern is not territories, but people.”
