Hollywood blockbusters Fall Guy and Planet of the Apes are filming in Sydney, and sci-fi remake Metropolis in Melbourne – all at high public expense, subsidised by state and federal governments. Is it worth paying for Americans telling American stories? Or would the money be better spent on Australians telling Australian stories? Michael West follows the money.

Scenes of Hollywood star Ryan Gosling on the Sydney Harbour Bridge over the weekend were met with fawning adulation in the mainstream media, yet with some consternation on social media. After all, they shut down traffic on the Bridge down for hours; yet climate protestor Violet Coco is facing a 15-month prison sentence for blocking one lane.

The Biden administration’s hypocrisy knows no bounds when it comes to human rights. Nearly every day, we hear pious condemnations of Russia and China for their human rights abuses—whether in Ukraine or toward the Uyghurs—and sermons about how the U.S. has to fight a new global war on authoritarian regimes.

At the same time, the U.S. continues to escalate its military operations in Ukraine, Somalia and in the Middle East, while supporting regimes notorious for human rights abuses like Saudi Arabia, which has waged a genocidal war on Yemen; and Rwanda, which is again on the assault in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

US Vice President Kamala Harris left out Americans’ right to life from the Declaration of Independence in a speech commemorating the 50th anniversary of Roe v Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court decision that made abortion a federally-protected right prior to its reversal last year. 

“America is a promise…of freedom and liberty,” Harris told the audience at Moon nightclub in Tallahassee on Sunday. “A promise we made in the Declaration of Independence, that we are each endowed with the right to liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”

The world-famous passage actually states that it is the “right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” that all men are endowed with. 

Harris took aim at the text of the national anthem next.

Under the government’s plans, about 15 buildings would be constructed on a land deck covering the regional and intercity rail lines which terminate at Central. The suburban rail lines would not be built over.

But Bates Smart managing director Philip Vivian said the government’s vision would be very expensive to build and result in narrow streets, tall towers blocking sunlight and a lack of connections over the uncovered suburban rail lines.

“The prime minister’s got himself into a very tricky position where he won’t provide the detail and I think millions of Australians expect the detail,” Peter Dutton told Sky News this week.

Dutton was being disingenuous and deliberately so. The Coalition spent nine years in government receiving regular expert reports on how a voice might operate.

Albanese has said all along this is not Labor’s voice. Aboriginal people asked for this form of constitutional recognition in the Uluru statement from the heart. It is not up to the government to be too prescriptive about it, he said.

The risks for Australia in joining another “failed” American war, this one contrived to crush China, are worse than even-money, and climbing. The consequences verge on existential.

Australia’s wartime Prime Minister John Curtin wrote to Britain’s Prime Minister Churchill in a 1942 letter marked “Most Secret” – “we make no apologies for our effort or even what you hint we are not doing. The various parts of the Empire, as you know, are differently situated, possess varying resources and have their own peculiar problems.“

Former President Donald Trump won the Senior Club Championship at his Trump International Golf Club on Sunday, he announced in a Truth Social post.

“A great honor to have won the Senior Club Championship at Trump International Golf Club, one of the best courses in the Country, in Palm Beach County, Florida,” Trump said.

US Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) had an event in New York on Saturday disrupted by a group of demonstrators who rose to their feet and began singing a Latin hymn for peace. The protestors were voicing their objection to the self-professed progressive’s vote to send billions of dollars worth of weapons to Ukraine.

Holding signs reading “negotiation not annihilation” and “stop sending weapons to Ukraine,” the group sang ‘Dona Nobis Pacem’, a Latin hymn used in the Catholic mass that translates as ‘Give Us Peace’.

“We always support everyone’s First Amendment rights here and everyone has the complete right to political expression,” Ocasio-Cortez responded, but only after the protesters had been removed from the premises by security.
