The US and its allies should seize the opportunity to sanction and prosecute the Wagner private military company in the wake of the aborted mutiny by its chief, Evgeny Prigozhin, according to two American celebrity activists.

The call was made on Monday by actor George Clooney and author John Prendergast, who also served on the National Security Council under President Bill Clinton. They said there was an “unprecedented opportunity to counter” Russia’s influence in Africa by going after Wagner.

In a column they wrote for The Economist magazine, Clooney and Prendergast described the private military company as one of Moscow’s “most successful foreign-policy initiatives during the past decade” and an “atrocity.”

There is no chance of Türkiye becoming an EU member next year, European Commission spokesperson Peter Stano has said. Ankara recently agreed to unblock Sweden’s NATO accession bid, with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan claiming that Brussels should “open the way” to EU membership for his country in return.

On Wednesday, Russia’s Izvestiya media outlet quoted Stano as saying that the “process of joining the EU takes years, not hours,” when asked about Türkiye being admitted into the bloc. He added that at present, Brussels is not even planning to grant Ankara visa-free status.

For that to happen, Türkiye would have to meet “all the necessary criteria, which include human rights and political freedoms,” Stano pointed out.

The claim that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is a proxy war is not borne out by recent history, nor supported by Russian democrats, Ukrainians of all stripes nor most Western Russia specialists. They mostly see its roots in an authoritarian Russian state and the revanchist views of Putin and his acolytes.

Several recent articles in Pearls and Irritations embrace the notion that the conflict in Ukraine is a “proxy war” by the United States and its allies.

The chaos that western ‘experts’ were expecting, ‘with libidinous excitement’, to unfold in Russia “which was certain to feature “Russians … killing Russians”, and with Putin “probably hiding somewhere.” – did arrive – except that it exploded in France, where it was not expected, with Macron on the ropes rather than it being Putin in Moscow.

Lord, I can't look favourably in good faith

The last time Hollywood actors and screenwriters went on strike at the same time, Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor were among its biggest stars.

Their films were temporarily halted, while the actors' union – led by Ronald Reagan, two decades before he became the US president – hammered out an agreement with studios.

Back then, performers were fighting for what are known as "residuals" — payments made to actors when their films were later broadcast on television.

Residuals became commonplace over the more than 60 years that followed, but streaming services have now up-ended the way they're paid.

Actors and writers are also grappling with a very modern challenge, warning they face an "existential threat" from artificial intelligence (AI).
