UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has said he will support “tough new laws”targeting labor actions, even suggesting an outright ban on walkouts by certain employees, after thousands of emergency workers announced upcoming strikes demanding pay raises amid soaring inflation.

Addressing MPs on Wednesday, Sunak warned that a wave of imminent strikes in multiple sectors, including healthcare and public transit, would cause major disruptions, saying he is prepared to do “whatever I need to do” to prevent work stoppages in vital industries.

Latvian MP Nataļja Marcenko-Jodko has hired a prominent local witch and ‘healer’ as her aide, official data on the website of the country’s parliament – the Saeima – shows. Her name is Sanita Petere, but she is more commonly known as the “White Witch.”

Latvian media outlets reached out to the witch herself for comment, with Petere insisting that the country’s parliament was just the right place for a woman in her line of business.

The defence ministers of Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States have met for the first time, endorsing a “pathway” to deliver nuclear-powered submarines. 

Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles met with US Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin and British Secretary of State for Defence Ben Wallace in Washington DC under the AUKUS pact announced by then-prime minister Scott Morrison in September 2021.

In a joint statement, they said the three nations “reiterated their shared commitment to the partnership and reviewed progress on identifying a conventionally armed, nuclear‑powered submarine for the Royal Australian Navy”.

The statement expressed confidence the leaders of the three countries would make an announcement early next year.

Stupendous amounts of carbon dioxide emitted by the world’s militaries are playing a huge but invisible role in driving humanity toward climate catastrophe according to a new report published by Scientists for Global Responsibility (SGR) with the Conflict and Environment Observatory (CEOBS).

I don’t desire a future for humanity like the ones imagined by our culturally designated future-imaginers. I don’t want humans living in Elon Musk Mars colonies or Jeff Bezos space cylinders. I don’t want us to fly out into the stars, to disappear into virtual reality universes, or to move away from our humanness by becoming cybernetic organisms.

Not yet anyway. Not for a long time. Not until we’ve done what we need to do here first.

Police in San Francisco can now use robots to kill people.

In an 8-3 vote by the city’s Board of Supervisors, the new policy grants the SFPD power to use lethal force via remote controlled robots. According to the police department it would now have the ability to deploy robots equipped with explosive charges “to contact, incapacitate, or disorient (a) violent, armed, or dangerous suspect” when lives are at stake, SFPD spokesperson Allison Maxie said in a statement.

U.S. military forces have been engaged in unauthorized hostilities in many more countries than the Pentagon has disclosed to Congress, let alone the public, according to a major new report released late last week by New York University School of Law’s Brennan Center for Justice.

Home owners are being told to brace for even higher mortgage bills in 2023 as the Reserve Bank’s inflation fight approaches a second year.

The RBA unveiled an eighth interest rate hike at its final meeting of 2022 on Tuesday, lifting its target by another 0.25 percentage points to a decade high of 3.1 per cent.

It capped off an unprecedented run of rate rises that’s seen more than $800 added to typical monthly mortgage bills for millions of households.

As RBA boss Philip Lowe warns further increases will be needed to bring inflation down from three-decade highs, economists say families must now brace for at least another $200 in additional mortgage pain.
