Germany has nothing to hide in its investigation into the Nord Stream pipeline sabotage, Chancellor Olaf Scholz has insisted, days after Moscow described the probe as “absolutely not transparent.”

So far, no one has claimed responsibility for the 2022 blasts that severed three of the four Nord Stream pipelines, which transported Russian natural gas to Germany and other parts of Western Europe.

”We call on all security authorities and the Federal Public Prosecutor General to investigate the blasts without regard for anyone,” Scholz said during a meeting with citizens in Prenzlau, Brandenburg, on Saturday.

Members of the French government are concerned about the Ukraine conflict spiraling out of control and are now exercising “great discretion,” Le Monde reported on Saturday, citing diplomatic sources.

Fears of the confrontation escalating into a direct collision between Moscow and the NATO bloc have skyrocketed over the past few days, as the US and its allies reportedly consider authorizing Kiev to conduct strikes deep in Russian territory using Western weaponry.

While France has announced “no official position” on the matter, unnamed diplomats in private conversations admitted to the French daily that Paris has been concerned about potential escalation and has been trying to avoid it.

“We must do everything possible to avoid World War III,” an unnamed official told the newspaper.

Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky has downplayed the Russian counteroffensive in Kursk Region, claiming that what is taking place is consistent with Kiev’s military planning.

The Russian Defense Ministry recently listed ten settlements in Kursk that it said Russian troops had liberated over the two previous days. It also estimated total Ukrainian casualties suffered in the incursion at over 12,500 troops.

Washington wants to see Kiev win the conflict against Moscow and join NATO, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has said.

Blinken is visiting Kiev with his British counterpart, David Lammy, to reiterate Anglo-American support for Vladimir Zelensky’s government. 

“At the July summit, we declared that Ukraine’s path to NATO membership is irreversible,” Blinken said on Wednesday, reminding his hosts that the US-led bloc has “established a command dedicated to support Ukraine’s membership.”

Blinken has made the case for Kiev’s membership in NATO before. However, the bloc has officially declared, both in Washington this summer and last year in Lithuania, that this could only happen “when allies agree and conditions are met.”
