Born in the wake of the Second World War, the UN "mistaken" from its very first steps, endorsing or sponsoring a colonial-style dispossession that, more than seventy-five years later, seems almost irreparable. The original sin? It was making the legitimate owners of the land pay (Asshab al Ared), namely the populations present in Palestine since time immemorial, a crime in which they had nothing to do with it, the Holocaust "discovered" in the Nazi camps upon their liberation being the work of Europeans (the Germans, but also many other "collaborators").

Last week Al Jazeera released Investigating War Crimes in Gaza.1 The 81-minute documentary is a searing indictment of the treatment of those who always suffer most in war – women and children – during Israel’s retaliation for the horrid murders Hamas inflicted inside Israel a year ago this week.

I have previously written about the European Union’s (EU) effort to use its infamous Digital Services Act (DSA) to force companies like X to censor Americans, including on postings related to our presidential election. This is a direct assault on our free speech values, and yet the Biden-Harris Administration has not raised a peep of objection. Now, the EU is threatening to set these confiscatory fines with reference to revenue from companies other than X, including Space X.

Elon Musk has denounced Joe Biden for saying the businessman had been an “illegal worker” before he became the wealthiest man in the world. The incumbent US president was accusing the billionaire of being hypocritical regarding immigration.

In response to the claims, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO made posts accusing the incumbent president outright lying and saying “losing the election was making the Democrats desperate.”

“I was in fact allowed to work in the US. The Biden puppet is lying,” Musk wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “They know this, as they have all my records.”

“So NOW he cares about illegals,” he quipped in conclusion.

Germany should stop paying social benefits to Ukrainian refugees residing in the country and redirect the money to authorities in Kiev instead, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski has argued. The diplomat claimed that generous handouts serve as a disincentive for Ukrainian men to return to their homeland and join the military.

According to Eurostat, more than four million Ukrainians are currently living under temporary protection in the EU, with Germany, Poland, and the Czech Republic hosting the highest numbers.

As of June, Germany was home to almost 1.2 million Ukrainian refugees, Statista estimated, while in Poland that number currently stands at over 981,000, according to UN data.

Word about the grassroots campaign has spread on social media, primarily on Facebook, with women putting "Woman to woman" notes in places where other women will see them.

In the weeks before Election Day, a loose-knit group of women are organizing online to blanket their communities with pro-Kamala Harris messages — not on yard signs or fliers, but on sticky notes. 

The idea is simple: Take a pad of sticky notes, write messages and post them wherever women may see them — bathroom stalls, the backs of tampon boxes, bathroom mirrors, the gym. 

 

The messages vary slightly, but a typical one reads something like: "Woman to woman: No one sees your vote at the polls. Vote Harris/Walz."

If bullshit was fungible, both Israel and Ukraine would be rolling in dough and not need another dime of foreign aid. The nonsense spilling out of Tel Aviv and Kiev is legendary and much of the Western public is slurping it up like a ravenous dog eating a bowl of rabbit stew.

President Joe Biden has formally apologised for the US's role in running abusive Native American boarding schools for more than 150 years and was heckled at the event by a Gaza war protester. 

"This to me is one of the most consequential things I've ever had an opportunity to do in my whole career," Mr Biden said in his apology in Arizona.

"It's a sin on our soul. … I formally apologise."

Hundreds of people attended the event and many of them were wearing traditional tribal clothing.

The crowd cheered as the US president apologised to the Native American community for the generational trauma caused by the boarding schools.

Immigration Minister Tony Burke confirmed that the Donald Trump-aligned influencer – who has claimed that Israel was founded by a “cult” and that “secret Jewish gangs” operate in Hollywood – would not be allowed in Australia as federal Labor attempts to lower the temperature on domestic protests about the war in the Middle East.

Writer and activist Arundhati Roy has been awarded the PEN Pinter Prize 2024. This is an annual award set up by English PEN in the memory of playwright Harold Pinter. Shortly after having been named for the prize, Roy announced that her share of the prize money will be donated to the Palestinian Children’s Relief Fund. She named Alaa Abd el-Fattah, British-Egyptian writer and activist, a ‘Writer of Courage’ who she would share her award with.
