NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte met with Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Berlin on Monday, in his first visit to Germany as the alliance's chief.

Of particular security concern for the NATO countries at the moment is the recent addition of North Korean soldiers to Russian troops fighting in Ukraine, marking a new escalation of the conflict.  

This presidential campaign season may be one of those turning points in history for reasons good and bad. Anyone watching the one debate between the Republican and Democratic Party candidates would not have come away with the view that this was a great battle of competing principles and visions for the future.

It was a campaign of name-calling and bullets, where one candidate avoided discussing ideas at all costs – and even avoided the media at all costs. Where the other candidate dodged two attempted assassinations while throwing red meat rhetoric to an understandably angry population.

The US and UK are setting up continental Europe for a military face-off with Moscow, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has claimed.

Lavrov issued the warning during his speech at the Inventing the Future symposium in Moscow on Monday.

Speaking about the Ukraine conflict, the top diplomat stressed that “the Anglo-Saxons [the US and UK] expect to defeat our country with the hands of the Kiev regime, just like Hitler, gathering most of Europe’s countries under the Nazi banner.”

“And, as a back-up plan, in case [Ukrainian leader Vladimir] Zelensky’s regime fails, they are preparing continental Europe to rush into a suicidal adventure and enter into a direct armed conflict with Russia,” he said.

The President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko has admitted there “really is” a dictatorship in his country, and it is one of “stability, security, order, kindness and hospitality.”

Lukashenko made the comments on Saturday at a ceremony honoring farmers in the country’s Grodno Region. Speaking about Western sanctions imposed on Belarus, he recalled that in July, Minsk expanded its visa-free regime to include the citizens of 35 European countries, allowing more Westerners to see the country for themselves.

“Already about a million people have been able to see with their own eyes that there really is a dictatorship in Belarus,” he said, according to Belta news agency. He clarified that this is “a dictatorship of stability, security, order, kindness and hospitality. A dictatorship of justice.”

The Foreign minister Penny Wong should recall Kevin Rudd as Australia’s ambassador to Washington.

Australia badly needs an ambassador who performs the traditional diplomatic role of trying to prevent a war: in this case, one involving Australia, China and the US. Instead, Rudd is promoting a new book in the US, “On Xi Jinping: How Xi’s Marxist Nationalism Is Shaping China and the World”. He has also been performing his many other ambassadorial roles.

The fate of the Starbucks Group is telling: Sales and profits in its current 7,300 stores in China are declining. The Chinese are not drinking less coffee, but prefer Chinese brands, partly because they offer more for less money.

Luckin Coffee, which was only founded in 2017, is rapidly taking market share from the American market leader. Even outside of China, such as in Singapore, Luckin Coffee stores are popping up everywhere and competing with Starbucks.
