an inspiring venture......

When SailGP was formed, Tom Slingsby was the obvious choice as driver and CEO of the Australian team given his decorated individual career and success in team competitions, including the 2013 America’s Cup. He has since proven his worth in SailGP, skippering the Aussies to Championship glory in both Season 1 and Season 2.

Youth
Although his father was a sailor and he had been around boats during his earliest years, Slingsby admits he wasn’t a strong junior sailor and instead focused his energy on tennis, which saw him evolve into a budding prospect. However, when the Olympics came to Sydney in 2000, he became “obsessed” with the sport when he saw the scenes taking place on the harbour and decided then and there to begin dedicating his training towards a career on the water.

Career
Slingsby is one of the most successful sailors in the world, having won an Olympic gold medal, nine world championships, the America’s Cup and setting numerous world records in addition to being crowned 2010 World Sailor of the Year.

He dominated the Laser class between 2006 and 2012, claiming six world titles during that period with his final championship coinciding with his Olympic gold medal in the event at the London Games. For his achievements in 2012, he was named the Australian Institute of Sport Athlete of the Year and received the Medal of the Order of Australia.

Shortly after the 2012 Olympics, he joined ORACLE TEAM USA as a strategist, helping mount one of the greatest comebacks in the sport’s history when the team won the America’s Cup in 2013. He went on to win the 2016 Sydney Hobart Yacht Race before returning to the American team as tactician and team manager for the 35th America’s Cup.

In December 2019, he earned his first world title in the Moth class after dominating the competition and winning all but one race.

Personal
When Slingsby is not competing, he can be found training the discipline of Brazilian Jiujitsu in which he recently earned his blue belt. He enjoys spending time with family and friends, as well as his beloved English bulldog, Nala, who regularly stars on his social media channels.

the last tack......

CONGRATULATIONS TO TOM SLINGSBY FOR WINNING THE DUBAI SAILGP.

ON THE 5TH LEG OF THE FINAL PODIUM RACE, THE FRENCH (DELAPIERRE) WERE AHEAD OF THE BRITS (SIR BEN) AND THE AUSSIES (TOM) IN THIRD. AT THE GATE BEFORE THE 6TH LEG, TOM AND SIR BEN HAD MANAGED TO CATCH UP AND THE THREE BOATS TURNED AROUND THE MARKER LIKE A SOLDIER-LINE. SIR BEN MOVED AHEAD, THE FRENCH HAD BEEN BOXED IN — AND TOM MOVED INTO SECOND PLACE. AT MORE THAN 50 KM/H TOM FOLLOWED SIR BEN ABOUT 50 METRES BEHIND, TACK FOR TACK.

THEN IN A BRILLIANT MOVE FROM BEHIND, TOM TACKED FIRST AT LIGHTNING SPEED, SURPRISING EVEN THE BEST OF THE BEST SIR BEN. BY THE TIME THE BRITISH BOAT REACTED, THE AUSSIES WERE PASSING THEM AT TWICE THE SPEED. PANIC ON THE BRITISH BOAT LED THE CREW TO MESS UP THEIR TACK, FALL OFF THE FOILS AND THE FRENCH PASSED THEM FOR SECOND PLACE....

BRILLIANT!

a bad storm......

A major weather incident at the end of racing on Saturday resulted in significant damage to the wing sails and at least one boat at the SailGP technical site. This forced SailGP to cancel the second day of racing on Sydney Harbour to allow a full assessment of damage to take place. Further information will be released as it becomes available, but in the meantime we answer some of your biggest questions.

What happened?

Following the conclusion of racing on Saturday, a major weather incident cause significant damage to the wing sails and at least one boat at SailGP’s tech site.

SATURDAY NIGHT (YESTERDAY 18 FEBRUARY 2023) A SUMMER HEAVY WARM CLOUD PASSED ABOVE SYDNEY. THERE WAS HIGH WIND, RAIN AND LIGHTNINGS. THOSE KIND OF STORMS ARE LOCALISED. WE ALREADY HAVE MENTIONED DOWNBURSTS WHICH CAN DO AS MUCH DAMAGE AS A TORNADO. DOWNBURSTS ARE IMPOSSIBLE TO PREDICT. ONE CAN BE UNLUCKY.

SEE: https://yourdemocracy.net/drupal/node/33287

Why was there an unpredicted devastating rain storm on Tuesday 7 February [2017] in Sydney?

The BoM [Bureau of meteorology] “predicted” a storm about 16 minutes after the storm started. The main event of the storm lasted 10 minutes and dropped about 50 mm of rain. It was pouring buckets! So how come the BoM did not see the storm coming?

There are various cloudbursts that lead to rain, hail and [sometimes] tornadoes. Some of these, despite highly sophisticated measuring devices, including radars, cannot be predicted. [the chance of] Tornadoes can often be predicted with sophisticated measurements, but not the downburst.

A strong cold wind from an upper level of the atmosphere can penetrate inside a large cloud (usually a cumulonimbus) from the side. Due to the differential of temperature between the cold wind and the warmer temperature inside the cloud, this strong cold wind can accelerate within the cloud in a downward motion, sometimes taking with it water droplets and ice crystals. It suddenly burst below the cloud at speed. In April, 2015, such burst brought down hail at the speed of bullets. This hail is smaller (olive sized) than the big golf ball/orange-sized which fall by gravity alone. [Sydney lost more than 20,000 roofs in April 1996 with hailstones as big as oranges].

The downburst can have speed up to 270 km/h downwards (75 m/s) while the updraft inside the cloud can be at 40 m/s. The downburst can make a lot of damage in the air (aircraft fatalities) and with a radiating strong flow once it hits the ground. As the downburt cloud passes, the wind direction will twirl according to the shift of the centre in the radiating ground wind. The debris will always fly away from the centre of the downburst while the debris usually fly towards the centre in a tornado. Imagine the different ends of a vacuum cleaner or a leaf-blower. One end sucks (tornado, reduced pressure), (http://www.nssl.noaa.gov/education/svrwx101/tornadoes/forecasting/) the other side blows (downburst, added pressure) (http://www.weatherquestions.com/What_is_a_downburst.htm) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Downburst). Downburst can often be mistaken for tornadoes, but the damage although as extensive, has a different pattern and a larger footprint on the ground. Microbursts are very localized downbursts and are also very hard to predict.

Torrential rain in Brazil has triggered flooding and landslides leaving at least 19 people dead on Sunday, according to authorities.

At least 19 people were killed in Sao Paulo on Sunday following flooding and landslides in Brazil's most populous city. The storm arrived on the same weekend as the Carnival of Brazil, an annual Brazilian festival held five days before Ash Wednesday.

An additional 228 people were left homeless due to the storms and 338 were also evacuated just north of the city of Sao Paulo, the government said in a statement. They added that rescue crews were working to address those who were displaced by the storm.

An eyewitness shared a video to Twitter of a group of people attempting save a child while caught in thick mud.

"A group of people gathered in a chain to help rescue babies and children. The case happened in the middle of the mud, in São Sebastião, this Sunday (19)," wrote Twitter user @damadanoite14.

congrats tom....

Tom Slingsby's Australia has reasserted its league-defining dominance by winning Season 3 in spectacular style and securing the SailGP three-peat on San Francisco Bay.

The Aussies claimed the one-million dollar prize in a nail-biting sprint to the finish after going head to head with Peter Burling's New Zealand and Emirates GBR in the three-boat, winner-takes-all Grand Final.

After finishing top of the San Francisco event leaderboard with three fleet race victories, the Aussies entered the three-boat showdown on a wave of momentum and confidence. They claimed the advantage early on, pushing out the Brits in the pre-start and taking the inside track to lead at Mark One.

Aggressive tactics throughout saw the Aussies only extend their lead and dominate for the majority of the race. But the most dramatic moment of the Final saw the Aussies fall off the foils on the penultimate leg, allowing the Kiwis to close the gap in the final stages of the race.
